[Mobile] Wifi provider requires "certificate"(?)

My Windows Mobile (6.1) smartphone works fine with my home wifi and any other normal wifi router. However, when I try to connect to my university'd wifi I get 2 messages, one after the other ...

"Server certificate issued by unknown authority."

"Cannot log on to the wireless network. This network requires a personal certificate to positively identify you."

University help states that they're working on a remedy, but that it's a year off. They did however suggest that a software called "Wifi Companion" somehow eliminates the need for a certificate. It's beyond me how it works, but it apparently does. I haven't yet found a source for this software, ie, without purchasing a volume license. Is there any other solution?

TIA
