Clear WiMax Service Now Available in Atlanta

The coverage section of the Clear.com website indicates that WiMAX service is now available for most of the Atlanta metro area.

I live just east of Atlanta and got Clear 6mbit/500kbps yesterday. So far, I'm impressed. Ping times are only slightly higher(5-10ms) than what I had with AT&T DSL. Downloads usually max around 1.2-1.4MB/s. I assume it won't stay like this once people start signing up, but I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts.

I got my clearwire modem yesterday - and from the gate I am getting 3.94mb/500k. Considering that the best ATT could do in my IFITL neighborhood was 1.5mb (sometimes)/256k (occassionally) - I am in heaven (right around Lawrenceville, Ga.)

Question - has anyone tried and succeeded connecting from a remote location to an machine on a Clearwire connection ?
So far I am having no luck and their "live chat" help did nothing just paste the FAQ's at me.

Thanks

UPDATE: the modem does have port forwarding so if like me you need to make an inbound connection from off-site - you will need to access the moden to allow the ports

I have been using the USB dongle on my laptop for several weeks and it is terrific! My speeds vary from 10MB/s download to around 6MB/s download. My upload is consistently .5MB/s. I have also purchased the "Spot" which lets up to 8 WiFi devices connect to my WiMax link.

I've posted more info over HERE (»www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/mobile-···nta.html).

Get it!

I have the Wimax modem hooked to my Linksys router. I just set the Linksys as DMZ on the Wimax modem so I'm not updating two firewall sets every time I want to open a port.

When I put my address in on their coverage page it comes back with only mobile service available. No home service even though my address is in the middle of the area shown as being covered on their Atlanta map. Anyone else having this problem?

Hi,

Clear Kevin here. Our coverage maps are very accurate but not perfectly accurate. There are occasionally situations where we have many square miles of coverage interspersed with the occasional "blind spot." This can be due to elevation, heavy foliage, and strong electromagnetic interference (such as that caused by an airport or military base).

These areas are dynamic and difficult to track in real-time graphics. So instead, we use the pre-qualification tool that you utilized on the website as a more accurate indicator of coverage. The pre-qualification tool is updated constantly and includes data based on local network augmentation and notes from our field technicians.

If you have any more questions, please let me know!

Thanks,

Clear Kevin out.

Re: Clear WiMax Service Now Available in Atlanta9

Signed up yesterday @ 5pm here in lawrenceville\Lilburn area 30044 via clear.com.
Got my equipment today (next day @ 12noon) Got home service with the motorola cpe/150 - purchased + 6mb/500k

Setup took 2 mintues + plus a little time finding best spot for strong signal. Get 2 bars just about anywhere in house, 3 at most outside walls downstairs and solid 3 near most outside walls upstairs, placed right up to the window gets me 4 bars in certain spots and I found a perfect little place on the top part of the lower pane to rest it on the side where it gets solid 4 and most of the time 5 bars fades more or less between high 4 and low 5 I guess.

speed test was 8-9mb down to atl, chicago, and dallas, 1.4-1.9 overseas to london. Upload was 500-600k to the above and 400k to london.

Ping times to atl, chic and dallas are NOT good, 115-150.. i can live with it for now, but I can't advise this for those that seriously game. The router's default password btw is motorola - course nothing documents that just found it by guessing. The feature are weak as hell... but the bare basics are there... port forwarding, basic fw (enable disable is only option wtf?), dhcp, dyndns, change internal lan network, and nice status screen. frankly I wish it just worked as raw modem so I could use a more powerful device behind it ... oh well homefully in the future they will make updated firmware available.

Given the problems I've had with comcast and bellsouth (who I will be keeping as a low speed backup - can't be down as I work from home) I'm fairly happy so far, the ping times suck but it's wimax so I'll deal and for work purposes so long as I have a reliable constant connection in the range of at least 3mb/500k and 125 pings I'll do me nice.

Really really wish they provided a raw modem option which I think they did in the past... don't get me wrong for the average joe it's nice simple little setup..

Lingering question... what happens to performance and service as they grow, the lack of support after 10pm isn't really cool either that will need to change in the longer term.

Well that's my 2cents on day number one with this service, fairly pleased and can't wait to tell comcast to f__k off (my service has been up and down for months at time and those jackles can't figure it out. they were my primary with BS as a backup, CW will be my new primary with BS remaining as a backup - it functions but barely at 1mb and 200k... )

So out of 5 stars I would give it 4 (pings + router drag it down a bit), but not bad for 35$ activation with no contract + 40$ a month. (I chose to by the router for like 75$)

Re: Clear WiMax Service Now Available in Atlanta

I just setup my Clear modem. I live in Suwanee and get one LED. I'll move the modem when I get a longer cable.

Did a Speed test from Speakeasy in Atlanta and got 1417k down and 40k up. Tried again and got 1250 down and 42k up.

I knew I was on the fringe but was hoping I would have better results.

Any one in Suwanee or Buford/ Sugar Hill getting better signal?

Thanks!

I just redid my setup.

When I had my house built four years ago, I had two cat5 and two cat6 cables ran from every room to my basement. I also had two ran from the attic to the basement.

I moved the WiMax modem to my attic and got 5 bars so I connected all the cables from my office, to the basement, to the attic.

Just did a speed test again to Atlanta from the Speedtest.net website did alot better.

Does Clear block port 80? I have a webserver at home where I store files I may need from time to time and I can no longer access it.

TreyS, I live in Suwanee and interested in this service since AT&T seems to have abandoned those of us on IFITL. What neighborhood/area do you live in? I am curious how this service compares to AT&T for my home. I use a wireless N router and hope that it would connect seamlessly to the modem.

edit: forgot to mention that my college kid son uses our connection for x-box gaming.

you can move your webserver to a different port. We do this with comcast all the time.

Besides the quoted monthly rate, what other fees/taxes get added to your bill?

Just sales tax. My bill is $46.14:

$40 for 6mb home internet
$4.99 for modem lease
$1.15 tax

I also live in Suwanee and looking to get Wimax service, but was wondering about the coverage, the coverage map on Clear's website isn't very descriptive. I live just north of McGinnis Ferry off of Suwanee Sam and Settles Bridge. Any Suwanee folks who can speak to the coverage there?
