Re: We got some news!-05/06/09 Slow Web Page Loading

Sorry it's not affecting all users. I haven't had a problem in the 18 months I had service.

I have signed up 8 people with U-Verse in my area and none of them have had issues.

You sure about that? The last person that I know who said this, when I personally checked to recreate the issue, it was there alrright, they just didn't notice it. I have yet to find a Uverse 2wire RG that does not have this issue. They all work the same.

Do you have a non-standard RG with your service? Are you using hacked firmware? Those are the only way I know of to not have the issue with the RG besides hard coding your dns or using your own router.

I have a standard RG just like everyone else. Trust me I would notice if it were an issue. As others have stated on here they don't have it either.

Not really contributing to this discussion, but...

Why did this get unsticky-ed again?

Not sure let me get it put back up.

When did you get service? Possible to get a serial & model number off the RG? Revision number? I wonder if they are finally shipping revised RGs with the better hardware.

I've had service for 19 months.

Hm, nevermind about getting info off the RG then. Still doesn't make sense why you aren't seeing an issue.

Do you have technical information about what causes the issue, that would allow you to make this assertion that "everyone has it, and if you don't think you do, you just don't notice it" ??

I was assuming, and I believe I even read this somewhere, that it is not a 100% thing by any means. Certain conditions have to exist to trigger it.

It is very hard to believe that a 100%, happens all the time, terrible slowdown in DNS resolutions through the RG's proxy, would have been shipped.

Personally, I'm pretty sure I would notice any sort of slowdown, because I am a very heavy user.

Just to make sure, I've now hardcoded the DNS IP addresses on the PC that I use most. I don't notice any difference at all in web page load times. It was fine before, it's fine now. If I do notice anything I'll report back here. (This PC is running IE8 and Windows XP.)

I did that yesterday with Vista 64, IE 7 and FF 3.5.2 (which is a PITA IMO). I didn't notice any difference hard coding the DNS vs. leaving it on the RG.

I would notice something like that.

My two cents... (I'm using XP-pro) - I didn't really notice any slowdowns, but one thing I noticed was that I was getting more than average number of pages not found. I also noticed that many of these would load after retrying. Then, it seemed like some would load with another browser, so I thought it was a Firefox problem, but I found that this wasn't the case.

At first, I thought it was just the nature of the beast. But soon, I suspected something was wrong, and I found these discussions about DNS problems, so I hard-coded the DNS addresses, and I haven't been having this problem.

My wife's computer seemed to have a delay (using IE7), so I hardcoded it for her, too, and it seems like it might be better, although I don't really use it a lot.

Lately, I've been trying out OpenDNS, which seems to be working well, fwiw.
Edit: OpenDNS had no noticeable effect, btw, and is not needed for my setup. I just wanted to try it, and I thought there might possibly be less chance that the hard-coded IP addresses would change, although I don't really know that this is true.

One thing to note about using OpenDNS - I found that for sites that use DNS-based location balancing (large providers like google, akamai, etc that have servers all over the country/world and direct you to different physical servers), OpenDNS would _sometimes_ direct me to a less than optimal physical server (higher pings, etc) vs the AT&T (hardcoded) DNS servers. I noticed this specifically with gmail and google maps.

YMMV.

Oh, thanks, now you've spoiled my ignorant bliss!

On my Linux system, I decided to set it to hard-coded U-verse DNS servers. I forgot, it was still set to DHCP, and I realize that I haven't noticed any timeout problems with using the gateway. It did seem a little sluggish, sometimes, but Firefox on Ubuntu has always been sluggish for me, so I didn't really pay attention.

Just to note once again for the record:

OpenDNS has nothing to do with this problem. Changing your DNS servers to OpenDNS may or may not be good for you, but it does nothing to make this problem better or worse.

MyDogHsFleas - I agree completely. Sorry, should have clarified that in my post.

Is everyone having this issue running a 2Wire 3800 HGV-B gateway, running firmware. 5.29.105.94?

I'm running that level so I assume it's the latest out there. No I do not see the problem.

I am running that level as well. I do not see the problem, but I am running behind another router in dmzplus (need the other router for vpn termination from work), so I really shouldn't see the problem.

Yes. I tried Hard coding DNS to network's TCP/IP and it's loading much faster now.
I found that it's 2wire gateway's problem with DNS info handling.
If you haven't hard coded DNS to TCP/IP, try typing ' ipconfig/all '
at Command prompt. and it will show you that DNS address is same address as gateway's IP.

You would need to hardcode the DNS server IP addresses in your "other router" to bypass the problem.
