Oxygen69 posted : No, the SAME problem still exists, and I don't think that AT&T really gives a crap, nor is going to fix it unless more people start dumping service. Where is the pressure on 2wire to fix their problem? I for one am seriously thinking of getting rid of U-verse.. Especially, since they went and raised the hell out of prices and are now cutting channels (again).

U-Verse service was attractive when they just started service up and had "Reasonable" prices on TV and internet. It was cheaper than cable before, but now since raising prices I can't really justify paying the cost (which is the same as cable basically) for it. I'll probably just dump TV, keep internet (hoping they fix it sometime), and watch TV from online free sites. I don't watch most of the channels anyways and it is really silly to pay for all of it when I watch maybe 10 channels that are free online anyways from their own website.

And AT&T wonders WHY their subscribership has declined so much this year.? DUH!

anon posted : Mixbus, you are not alone! I recently got my RG replaced because I complained about my slow speeds, and the replacement came with the older firmware. For a day, my speeds were fast, at around 10mbps, but the next day I found out that the firmware was upgraded to the current one, and my speeds dropped back down to 1mbps with extremely high lag. The lag that I'm experiencing causes a pause in website loading or Youtube watching for about 5-20 seconds, which comes and goes frequently.

I blame the newest firmware for this problem. Hard coding the DNS numbers don't help, and ATT has no idea what I'm talking about. Help would be greatly appreciated!

anon posted : I follow these discussions on the uverse forum, and I believe this issue has been traced to the 2wire modems not handling multiple (read lots!) of simultaneous requests or certain types - like lots of DNS proxy / forwarding requests from a single host.

Whether it is a DDOS avoidance, a QOS management or a memory allocation issue - I guess is up to 2wire. But the end effect is that some hosts (typically BSD or Linux based - which includes Macs as BSD) do not self limit their requests as much as historic Windows OS's have done.

I apologize that I have not read every entry in this now 8+ page thread, but my understanding of the issue boils down to this as it relates to the 2wire modems... Windows OSs have traditionally limited the number of simultaneous TCP / UDP requests that they would run (some might say to reduce the possibility of DOS attacks) where as my understanding is that Macs (BSD) and other BSD/Linux machines do not limit simultaneous requests quite so much. Either their limit is higher or there is no limit. And basically, the 2 wire starts choking and coughing if one host starts spraying too many simultaneous requests at the same time.

I believe this issue effects certain services worse than others. aka, if a host is forwarding all DNS requests to the gateway for proxy/forwarding, there might be trouble. If on the otherhand, a host is directly sending its DNS (UDP) requests to a DNS server outside ... the 2wire merely forwards the connections as usual - and there are no problems.

So, the work around many people have found that works is hard coding DNS servers in their hosts - allows the 2wire gateway not to be trying to proxy so many simulataneous connections through its DNS proxy / forwarding mechanism.

I would assume this is a software issue in the 2wire modem where they dont' allocate enough memory or artificially constricted the number of simultaneous requests that could eb supported per requesting host on the network. Not sure if it is an accidental or an intentional restriction, but it seems to affect Macs more heavily than Windows machines.

I hope this helps the conversaion.

Scotty 1949 posted : How does a corporation take a 6Mbs connection and make page loading noticeably slower than a 1.5Mbs DSL connection? Apparently, it wan't difficult for the mighty AT&T. Not to worry, it mainly troubles those unfortunates who own Macs.

I've been reading posts from over 5 years ago documenting the problem. Yeah, all you have to do to "fix it" is to go into every mac on your network and change the DNS servers. That shouldn't be too hard for Grandma on her new Christmas Mac (hey, you told me these things were easy to use!)

Come on AT&T, let's fix this or make sure when someone orders u-verse (and they're using a mac) know they can expect near dial up page loading unless they want to read a couple of hundred posts to figure out how to fix the problem themselves. I know, it's really 2wire's fault. Who cares? Get it fixed, this is ridiculous.
