[General] BTES - Fiber Internet.... 256k upload on all tiers?

I've been researching cities I'd potentially want to move to, preferably with some type of FTTH connection present. During my Internet searches I stumbled upon Bristol, TN which apparently has a very successful muni-FTTH project through the local electric company. Their upload speeds are barely "broadband" though- 256kbps!! »www.btes.net/btesinternetrates.html

How can anyone take that seriously? I have 8 times that upload speed without powerboost on the regular Comcast tier... What do you think about this? I personally believe they should be ashamed to use that number and the words "fiber optic" on the same page.

Re: [General] BTES - Fiber Internet.... 256k upload on all tiers

Easy answer: competition is lousy in the area.

More involved answer: maybe they're getting a highly asymmetric link on the backbone side of things (for whatever reason) or want to discourage P2P, or are getting a sweet deal on inbound bandwidth by partnering with some datacenter or other.

Though I agree, 256k upload is pathetic. I'd rather have 3/512 for $60 than 12/256...

While that is true, both Charter and Embarq offer substantially higher upload speeds than 256k
