Wow....

Attempted murder anyone? I can't believe that the person who took the truck, didn't see the tech in the basket, I mean, how could one possibly miss them?

Perhaps he did see them and took the truck anyway. Make that aggrivated attempted murder.

I would guess the Charter "worker" was asleep...just like they all are up here in NE Wisconsin. They won't run cable here if their lives depended on it. If you do get them to respond, they quote some silly $30K to run a cable to your home...

I do hope the worker recovers, and I am not making light of the situation, but man, around here, Charter blows....

Usually criminals do not factor in the welfare of their victims when they go to commit a crime.

That was kind of my point, if they knew the person was in the basket, which I couldn't image they wouldn't, they are willingly putting that persons life in danger and in fact, it did become dangerous and the person is now in serious condition due to someone who felt the need to steal a cable company truck.

Re: Wow....

On the serious side, I agree, these dopes do need the book thrown at them. WHO in their right mind would steal a truck while the basket is extended? Doesn't that make the getaway rather difficult?

The one question I have is, did they hotwire the vehicle, in which case, how could the tech not see them? Or...if they didn't hotwire, why were the keys in the ignition? No, they don't need to be there to run the basket...trust me.

They'll get some ambulance chaser lawyer who will argue their "client" didn't see the person up in the bucket...they'll also say they're a "good" person who made a bad decision.

Chances are this scumbag is a career criminal with a long record who shouldn't be on the streets anyway.

Had a very graphic example of that a few years ago here. Some dude was driving at a high rate of speed and lost control of his car, crashing into a bunch of children waiting to get into the zoo. When pulled from his car and told he just killed a bunch of kids, he said "That don't mean nothing to me."

Depending on the truck, yes they do.

The buckets are usually on hydralic lifts, run by a hydralic pump turned by the engine, which needs to be on. Often the buckets have a remote start/stop feature for the engine but it can be disabled from the cab with the flip of a switch or just taking off the parking break in most cases.

They often also have electric backup motors, but those are usually for emergency use.

At least thats in the more than dozen utility bucket trucks I've used in the last 5 years...

That's an easy getaway. Just drive under a bridge. If you are reckless enough to drive the poor charter employee through the power lines, you may as well smash him into a bridge.

I know we all get angry at our ISPs sometimes, but I sense a little repressed anger here.

That really depends on the truck... When I worked for a cable company we had f450's with altec buckets on them. The key needed to be in the ignition and the ignition on. But there was a kill switch in the bucket.

Am I the only one who wonders why this guy wasn't belted off?

I was wondering the same thing...aren't you SUPPOSED to be harnessed when aloft like that? I know we never took a chance of getting caught without a harness.

He probably was belted, but when the truck started moving and the basket started banging into stuff, he may have decided to jump for it rather than get caught in some live power lines, smashed into a bridge/sign/tree and enveloped in the twisted jagged metal that was the cage.

Or the guy was retarded and didnt have his saftely harness in use.

The summary also says it was a carjacking, which to me means there was someone in the cab and they were forced out.
