You don't need to repair it. par repairing is done for you, if it's needed.
I can't imagine what practical benefit downloading multiple small rar files provides. With a direct link to the unrared video, you just start the download and begin watching right away (provided the video bitrate is less than your downstream). |

1 edit | Smaller rar files add error protection, my line is a bit noisy and I like the extra error correction. Any garbled bits on my end can be detected (by rar extractor) and fixed with the pars.
But if you have a pristine line, it could work as you describe. Never got a file that big via http, so I am a bit skeptic, but that's just me. I suppose with Flashget or a similar program it could work.
XLned doesn't seem to offer the feature you mentioned, just regular nntp server connections. -- Compare prices for Canadian retailers, Find 'Hot Deals', meet nice people at PriceNetwork.ca |

3 edits | Noisy lines in general don't affect the IP layer. Retransmits are dealt with at lower levels. TCP checksumming is in practice sufficient enough to deal with bit errors that do crop through.
I strongly doubt any errors you have with your downloads are due to bit errors that TCP didn't catch. MUCH more likely, you use pars to fix missing parts or incomplete parts. With the Easynews scheme, if the file was autounrared, it is verified on their end de facto.
And in any case, you can use https with easynews, and SSL intrinsically provides more resilience to datastream corruption. (But I maintain that's not needed in practice.)
HTTP regets are supported. If your fetch dies, just restart it and it continues where it left off. Any decent http transfer tool will take care of this. (I just use wget from my file server.) |

| reply to El Quintron I agree Tack, even on my Cogeco connection which is excellent in reliability I get errors with my Usenet account. Every time that's happened, .par files were included with the files anyways, so I just repaired them and I was fine. -- I love fish sticks. I love putting fish sticks in my mouth. |

3 edits | Suffice it to say that I've not ever had a corrupt autounrared download from Easynews' web access. And the sort of in-transit errors you're describing are extremely rare with unencrypted TCP and basically impossible with SSL. (In other words, the problem would be something else, and not likely to occur with http transport.)
That's not to say Easynews has never had problems. But the problems I've experienced were never related to corrupt data. |

| reply to El Quintron Tack, you are right, I was being a bit paranoid here.
TCP has the error checking in each packet, I think the sheer size of an 8GB http download shocked me a bit.
Have turned on ssl on my news connection now (XLned) and it is working very well. -- Compare prices for Canadian retailers, Find 'Hot Deals', meet nice people at PriceNetwork.ca |

here is one special, $10/month unlimited...but what makes this one pretty good is you get 20 threads and they can be from different ips so you could share with a few people...
if anyone is interested in making a little group so we could split by say 3 this would be a much better deal than the $4 teksavy...i read that 3 threads will max out a typical dsl connection btw... |

I've test some tunnel provider, and the one performing best is »www.tunnelbroker.net/, with their toronto server located at torix.
To setup the tunnel (with HE) just go in you tunnel detail, and look for : Example OS Configurations (Windows, Linux, etc). So easy to setup. The best would be integrating this into tomato with radvd and such. It's possible under openwrt with a bit of work, but I prefer tomato. |

Well my tech support like buddy uses it, that says all I need said. You get it free with unlimited Giganews. But it's good enough to pay the one shot fee if you are not with Giganews.
We have also decided to see if Astraweb is earning it's praise, and might be the new thing for us. I've enjoyed Giganews, but hey, why pay 30 bucks for something if you can get it for 13 bucks?
When retention exceeds 200 days, it becomes a bit silly to fuss over it. 245, 265 is there any real difference? |

Why pay $13 when there's an Astraweb offer for USD$11 per month even ?

| reply to SaveTheNet said by SaveTheNet :Usenet does have its own weaknesses though. No uploading, but you have PAR files to fix CRC errors. Missing parts and the whole parts thing can get annoying Sometimes you grab most of something just to find out a single piece is too old / gone and you have to wait for a PAR file to be upped just to fix the file or try again from the beginning. Retention times are insane these days, I believe Astraweb is up to 270 days, if you need content that far back.. .
Tried a pay to have usenet for a bit and found myself back on torrents, not due to being lazy, but since usenet simply didn't work so well at all for what I was looking for. Even with a huge >250 day retention. I didn't try multiple providers though, just the 1 that was both high speed and insane retention times.
HD content was like, 10's of thousands of pieces and this lead to alot of waste when things were missing..
If UBB comes, I feel using IRC could make a much better solution. I have been using Usenet almost from the day I hit the net, and I can say (with the exception of the pre-par days) that things are far better then torrents or any other scheme thats out there.
Even when I was on AOL, using my own Internet connection getting movies and music... -- It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses. |

Yesterday, doing some testing, I queued up and got a complete release posted 180 days ago.
Their website lists retention up to 185 days now, and it maxes my connection easily.
Incredible service for free. Thanks for mentioning them, corkyy.
I use the Hexago Gateway6 client, and it tunnels right thru my NAT in the modem no problems. Tried HE's server but it seems to require me to put their system either in the open net or in a router's DMZ, to allow protocol 41 connectivity. |
