Re: TSI Usenet vs. Paid Usenet

Usenet does have its own weaknesses though.
No uploading, but you have PAR files to fix CRC errors.
Missing parts and the whole parts thing can get annoying
Sometimes you grab most of something just to find out a single piece is too old / gone and you have to wait for a PAR file to be upped just to fix the file or try again from the beginning.

Tried a pay to have usenet for a bit and found myself back on torrents, not due to being lazy, but since usenet simply didn't work so well at all for what I was looking for.
Even with a huge >250 day retention.
I didn't try multiple providers though, just the 1 that was both high speed and insane retention times.

HD content was like, 10's of thousands of pieces and this lead to alot of waste when things were missing..

If UBB comes, I feel using IRC could make a much better solution.

Just an FYI SaveTheNet See Profile if you use something like HellaNZB or SABnzbd+ it eliminates the need for PAR, PAR2 and CRC errors.

The few times I've used Usenet, my only issues were with older files.

Long as you download the stuff in your providers Retention you should not have many issues with missing files. I love it no way I could never upload all the stuff I download with usenet back using torrents. 720P rips are near 5 gigs and 1080P ones are near 12gigs.

With usenet and my HD player it's good stuff.

Retention times are insane these days, I believe Astraweb is up to 270 days, if you need content that far back.. .

I have been using Usenet almost from the day I hit the net, and I can say (with the exception of the pre-par days) that things are far better then torrents or any other scheme thats out there.

Even when I was on AOL, using my own Internet connection getting movies and music...
