2 edits | Firmware updates and software changes to the modem are done through their network. A bridged modem will not be able to get those updates. With the merger on it's way, that is important, since CenturyTel uses PPPoE and Embarq using DHCP, one side or the other will most likely be changing. With the unbridged modems, they can just push an update to the modem and the end user won't notice a connection difference. However, a bridged modem would have to get out of bridge mode, change to the proper connection method, and then re-bridge if they want to.
Also it is harder to do network troubleshooting with a bridged modem, as sometimes line stats, etc, are pulled directly from the modem. These are not accessible when it is in bridge mode.
Also, since many times one of the first steps in troubleshooting is a hard reset, which will unbridge the modem, it's a problem when people were bridged, do a hard reset, and then have to wait and find out that their modem is now unbridged, call back and get directions on how to bridge it again, etc. |

| Mine is also bridged and no problems with that so far. Speed wise there was not a lot of difference between the two but an extra hop when your routing has several already can add up to more latency than one would like I haven't seen any firmware updates here for close to a year. I sure hope CTel does not revert the system back to PPOE as things are much easier using DHCP.
One thing I can say for Embarq is their reliability has improved in my area immensely! We went through a period of tornadic weather this past Friday night with power failures and all but my DSL never missed a beat,,cable did! I may have spoke too soon,,usually do but I felt this was worth a mention considering the troubles I have experienced with the service! Joey and my local tech made it happen! |

My modem is not bridged, and I have no trouble with BitTorrent downloads. Of course, the SBC issued DSL modem is a rather dumbed down single device router. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

| reply to rabeatz said by rabeatz :since CenturyTel uses PPPoE and Embarq using DHCP Woah. I know this is a little off topic but what is the current plan here? Anyone know? If I have to give up my true static IP then (and anyone who knows me can tell you what extreme distress this causes me to say) we'll be switching to Comcast. The static IP is the only thing that is keeping me with Embarq, since PPPoE will flat-out fail on my line with all the resyncs. |

| reply to herb77 Not sure what you mean but if you're paying extra per month for a static IP then you won't be affected. If you are currently using DHCP and you're not paying for a static IP, then you don't have a static IP.
But no - nobody has an answer to that as to what will happen. Anything you hear is just pure speculation, and the only official information you can get is at the merger website - »centurytelembarqmerger.com |

RadioDoc 58ef2c0 Premium,ExMod 2000-03 join:2000-05-11 | I am paying $4.95 extra per month for a true static IP address (not DHCP). Have been since the Sprint days.
By the way, that website is useless for questions like this. |

rabeatz Premium join:2009-03-21 Apopka, FL | reply to herb77 Well then, to answer in pure speculation, A large amount of EQ customers in Ohio are in the process of being converted from PPPoE to DHCP, so it seems things are going in that direction. |

| Speaking from 9 years of PPPoE madness in Chicagoland it works fine when the line is fine but if you've got iffy transport it is a nightmare. If I didn't have a static address in Naples that connection would be unusable.
Thanks for the info...keep us as informed as you can. |

rabeatz Premium join:2009-03-21 Apopka, FL | reply to herb77 Well, the tech personally might not mind it - but there is pressure from upper levels to not bridge unless it is either absolutely necessary, or, if the customer requests directions on how to bridge it. |
