ParogadiWhat? Stop Looking At Me Like ThatPremium join:2003-03-31 Racine, WI | [Rant] Netbooks, why do they all manage to get close, yet fail.. Why the hell can't I find any non Intel netbooks, or even intel netbooks that don't all have some major flaw?
I've seen the Raon Everun Note »www.dynamism.com/#Product=everun_note an all AMD Netbook using an ATI x1200 IGP, but while having a great keyboard and a decent sized SSD and comes with Linux or no OS preinstalled has an absolutely hideous track eye where the track pad, yes eye it's an upside down optical mouse on the front. Lets not even go into the absolutely useless battery life...
Next up is the System76 Starling, great you may think, why not settle for the standard Atom/GMA900 combo like 99% of all netbooks as long as it's going to a smaller company that sells just Linux preinstalled systems? It even comes in black, which is a plus. But wait, it also comes with a crap HDD, who the hell wants a slower, more prone to failure HDD which has moving parts, all of which will fail the first time it gets knocked off the desk in an epic head crash that scrapes off the layer containing the data required to recover any data at all... Also, why the hell do you have a custom config page when you can't change anything? No HDD or SSD options, no option to up the ram to 2Gb? Everything else you sell that has a config page that at least lets you pick some optional parts...
Dell Mini? Need we say more...
Samsung NC20-21GBK? Now thats interesting, VIA Nano based Netbook, sounds good, nice encryption acceleration for TrueCrypt volumes, but wait what? 12.1" hardly a netbok...Wait this thing isn't even supported by UniChrome or OpenChrome linux driver projects are they? VIA get off your lazy asses, you promised Open source support by working with these reverse engineering projects, put up or shut up.
Asus N10? Interesting, atom paired with the Geforce9300, I'm no fan of Nvidia, bu at least I'll have VDPAU HD video decoding and Flash acceleration support and 2Gb of ram stock. Whats this? Vista only? No SSD, only an HDD? Shit battery life? For how much? Stop smoking crack!
Asus EEE S101? Nice, looks decent, light, better keyboard, slightly easier to read screen. Why'd you cut thee battery life? no linux version? Is that false Swarovski crystal on the side? Way to gay it up...
Is the now discontinued Asus EEE 1000 40Gb SSD in black the only netbook that didn't have some major design flaw aside from the gimped out GPU?
I'm not looking for something fast, not at all, I'm st wanting something small and light, preferably with the ability to offload heavy lifting of video decode, flash and encryption. But no, nobody can do it right it seems and make a perfect Netbook, or hell, even an ultralight subnotebook for less the 2 grand...
I know AMD hasn't released XvBA yet, but they've claimed it a priority and they've already come through on their promises for doc and sample code for all of the ATI video hardware and a good portion of the power management docs for powerplay, so one can at least be hopeful.
Also, I know Nvidia has a chipset for thee VIA Nano, why the hell isn't there any VIA/Nvidia netbook?
Lastly, why the hell do they keep making so many netbooks with hard drives? I don't need or want the space on a laptop, I want durability and battery life, the speed of an SSD is secondary to this, if it's only $2 more for a 64GbSSD that does 5Mbit faster reads and writes then another model, then by all means go for the faster one, but don't go with a slower, fragile hardrive just because it holds more for less money, it's not worth it.
As for the 2Gb of ram, why the hell not, 2Gb dimms are dirt cheap, hell you can even get 4Gb dims for laptops these days, but they aren't worth the price. But 2Gb is kind of essential, the IGPis going to take a good chunk of your ram, then if you're using an SSD you're going to disable the swap file anyways to save on the duty life of he SSD, why kill it faster because some retarded app thinks it needs to cache everything on the swap when you have more then enough ram?

All I can say is look at the Iphone. Smartphones and PIMs had been around forever, but IPhone took it to the next level. MP3 players had been around for years, Ipod took it to the next level.

Tell all that to my still-chugging-along Sony Picturebook, PCG-C1VPK. Solid State Drive? Pah, just a dream! Touchpad? What's that? | | ParogadiWhat? Stop Looking At Me Like ThatPremium join:2003-03-31 Racine, WI | I think avd706 has t right, it won't be till good old Steve-O comes along and puts one out that we'll see a netbook that will just hand everything else it's ass on a silver platter.
It can't be too much to ask for, they are doing it, jst not all at the same time. Just seems to be more of a collective stupidity in the market.
You can't take an underclocked and undervolted VIA Nano, a cheap 32-64Gb SSD in mini PCIe format »www.newegg.com/Product/Productco···20609407 and an underclocked and undervolted Nvidia Geforce 8200 or 9300 IGP chipset and a $20 2Gb stick of DDR2 »www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi···hInDesc= then offer it in XP and Ubuntu Netbook Remix versions.
That lets you keep the weight and size to a minimum and will produce less heat and use less battery, seems to me like a perfect trade off in such a device. | | JahntassaWhat, I can have feathersPremium join:2006-04-14 Conway, SC kudos:4 | reply to Parogadi I guess my 1000HE does what I want for a price that wasn't much to scream about. $400 and it's more powerful than my old $2,300 toughbook? Not too bad.
For the size and price I get what I need. Web browsing, IM clients, even a little photoshop and remote access of other systems in an easy-to-carry package. Much easier to carry around than my 14" work system.
I can't see paying twice that for an Apple Netbook that will most likely be heavier and have some random different problems that go under the radar because it's Apple. (Like the White Macbook now with permanent grey wristpads! Or perhaps the battery that holds half its charge a year and a half later)
Netbooks are still pretty much in their infancy. They're still trying to figure out the market for them. | | dvd536as Mr. Pink as they comePremium join:2001-04-27 Phoenix, AZ kudos:4 | reply to Parogadi said by Parogadi:I think avd706 has t right, it won't be till good old Steve-O comes along and puts one out that we'll see a netbook that will just hand everything else it's ass on a silver platter. Yeah and expect it to cost 4x what your average netbook goes for. Everyone says that same sh!t, but seriously, I've never seen it. Trust me, I know the prices on PC hardware, I build all my linux boxes and my next build will be a liquid cooled AMD Phenom 2 955, 8Gb DDR3 1333, 790FX/SB750 mobo and an HD4890. I'm looking for an oc to 4Ghz on the 955, if I'm lucky maybe I can get it to 4.5Ghz in the winter.
I also say this looking at my G4 Quicksilver that I intend to keep upgrading as long as I possibly can to keep the old bastard running. | |
