Lord FishPremium join:2009-01-26 Northbrook, IL 1 edit | Can exceeding the cap affect your speeds? I subscribe to the 50/10 plan, and my speeds have always tested out right around where they should be. For the last week or so, my upload speed is suddenly testing between 4 and 5 Mbps. This is less than half of what I was getting before. Last month, I uploaded/downloaded about 400GB of data. Obviously, this is way over the 250GB cap. Is it possible that the two things are related?

Is it possible that the two things are related? They are not supposed to be. Are you sure nothing else was going on (like an upload) when you did the test? Are your test results alway the same, day or night? Did you do any of that troubleshooting that someone will post a link to, in a minute or so?
Near as I can tell blowing the cap (and getting called on it) means you get a letter (or call) from comcast.
Now, if your node is experiencing congestion, you may be seeing the de-prioritization effect. But that would clear after 15 minutes of low/no traffic, which is why I asked if the tests were the same at various times.

Are your test results always the same, day or night? I always make sure to test when there is no other activity going on. And yes, it doesn't matter what time of day I test, the results are still the same. It's probably just a coincidence, but it does seem like rather strange timing. I have probably tested my speed every day since I upgraded to a D3 plan, and my upload speeds were always rock solid at 10 Mbps before I exceeded the cap. For the record, I was doing an inordinate amount of uploading last month, as I was seeding a bunch of torrents.

I simply went through the usual steps of rebooting the modem and my SmoothWall, but it didn't help. Specifically, what diagnostics/troubleshooting steps can I perform that might help us gain some insight into this issue?

I am assuming you have a 6120, I would reset to defaults on your modem, I bet if you check your config you are on a lower symbol rate and QAM for your upload. A full reset sould make it lock onto the correct rates. I had this same problem with my 22/5 going down to 3-4Mbps upload.

I assume that you are referring to the "Reset All Defaults" option in the modem's web interface. Is this correct? After I do this, what will I need to do to get back up and running? Will I have to call Comcast, or will the modem automatically reconfigure itself? Will I have to power cycle the modem? How long will it be before I'm surfing again?

Just open your browser on your computer and go to »192.168.100.1 (you may be able to click on that url), then go to the Configuration tab at the very top. Once there click on the "Reset All Defaults" button, the page will refresh, then click on "Restart Cable Modem" button. It will then state your modem will restart in 10 seconds, which it will. Then your modem will start the start-up procedures and you should be back online when done, and back on the higher channels. -- Duct tape is like The Force it has a light side and a dark side, and it binds the Universe together

Well, hopefully, but your right, its not a guarantee that it will work, but its a starting point. I have heard sometimes it will take a few times for it to catch the right channel, but at least in my usage, mine only takes one reboot to get back on the right channel. YMMV -- Duct tape is like The Force it has a light side and a dark side, and it binds the Universe together

My upload speed is now back to where it should be. Unfortunately, I now have a different problem to solve which is most likely unrelated. I am experiencing some sluggishness when surfing. Sometimes, when I try to go to a site, there is a long delay before it loads. Once I'm at a particular site, it seems to run relatively smoothly, but then the issue will reappear when I go to another site.
Edit: It looks like it was a DNS problem. I manually entered some different DNS servers into my router, and everything appears to be working fine now.
