Re: [FP] Bad storms rolling through

Speaking of those UPS units, I learned a hard lesson back in December 2006 when we had a power outage. Mine were all on good UPS units, but I hadn't bothered to install the included software, had not configured them to operate other than at default.

Default, apparently, just shut the computer down when the power went off and then restarted shortly after it returned. That had always worked fine for me, but that 2006 storm caused multiple power events in rapid succession which resulted in murdering most of the equipment I had up and folding at the time.

I have a smaller farm now, but I have configured my UPS software to shut down after a short power outage and to stay down until I manually bring it all back up. I am hoping that is a safer plan.

I don't know if that is possible for all UPS units. I run APC SmartUPS with PowerChute software.

This is how I have all of mine configured. I'll bring the damn things back up when I'm ready. I've barbecued a power supply or two due to over-cycling before I changed those settings.
