DirecTV has always been ahead of the curve with digital TV. I don't see them going away any time soon. Their picture quality is the best out there (I have not seen FiOS or U-Verse yet) but they have built a very strong customer base.
I am very pleased and wouldn't consider switching to anyone else. |

| reply to delusion ftl I agree. When UVerse has enough homes passed, ATT will have no reason to stay with direct TV. And, as broadband becomes more and more prominent, people will be looking to bundle; and as far as I know, DTV has no plans for internet access. They will also eventually run out of bandwidth when 3DTV rolls around.
I had DTV here once, the picture quality was great when it worked. I didnt have a perfect view to the southern sky though, and would often lose picture in rain, wind, and snow. |

3DTV is a nice tech demo but the money necessary to implement even a basic system is not there. I've seen the prototypes going back to the early 90's and the general market will never embrace it. |

Never is too harsh a word. How about 'not in at least 5-10 years'? |

ISDN DSL Fiber
AT&T is a crap monopoly that will only do the bare minimum to get by and they dont even do the minimum very good. |

 | We were talking about 3dtv, but yeah, I agree about At&t. |

| reply to delusion ftl I disagree as well. DBS is competitive I feel because of their MUCH lower infrastructure costs.
Both Cable and DBS has the same main cost: Content provider charges. Once you get past that, however, look at the difference. DBS has many expensive satellites to buy and launch and replace, but those costs are much less then the cost to cable companies to keep their infrastructure of wires and nodes up and running and upgraded.
Cable has the advantage here of being able to provide broadband and telephony services that DBS cannot, so that helps them offset some of these costs and make money... but when it comes to pay TV service only, DBS has the edge due to much smaller infrastructure costs.
I too do not see DBS vanishing anytime soon... if ever. -- "Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power." -- Benito Mussolini

Jerm join:2000-04-10 Richland, WA kudos:2 1 edit | reply to comp SD is pretty bad - I have to say I saw European providers 480 stuff that was amazing compared to DTV. Problem is cable does the same overcompression most of the time when they start going digital
EDIT - and one other thing, to refute the customer base thing: Sat will ALWAYS get the rual customers. Cable isn't everywhere. TelcoTV is even more limited. |

| reply to baineschile said by baineschile:I agree. When UVerse has enough homes passed ROFL, I'm in one of the cities where AT&T rolled out DSL almost a decade ago. AT&T still can't deliver more than basic DSL to me, and most of my city. AT&T can't deliver U-Verse to more than half my city.
I don't know what is keeping AT&T alive other than obscene profits on land and cell phone service. -- "People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use." |
