[BC] DHCP Renew IssuesI have had Telus internet for a few months now, and I am running into a strange issue. It seems every once in a while my router wont renew its IP from telus. If i force it by shutting down and turning the interface back on it works fine and grabs and IP. But occasionally it will just lose its IP and wont renew it. Has anyone else encountered such problems and knows of any solutions? I am pretty sure its not my router as it works fine with my Shaw line.
I chatted with a friend and it seems to do it on his Linksys router as well. The problem is it happens randomly and it can go days on end without a problem.
Thanks in advance for any input on this matter. |

Is there a setting you can manually alter within your router that will force it to automatically renew it's DHCP lease after a set interval? Some routers are set to check every 4 days while some are set to check every 12 hours. Some may be not set to check at all. Have a look at the settings in your router and play with the settings. If that doesn't work, I might consider a firmware update for you router if one is available.
When you manually reboot your router, does it pick up a different IP Address or is it the same IP? |

As far as I know there is no settings to automatically renew after a said time interval. It is just using the telus default one of 1hr.
When I manually renew the IP it seems to always pickup a new one. |

I noticed my tomato router is much more "adaptive" to these types of issues than the base Linksys, TendNet, Asus, and Belkin routers. In particular I had an ISP (not Telus) that for whatever reason was causing a loss of the IP.
The only way I got it to work was to install tomato, set a scheduled restart, and had the router do a keep alive ping every 5 mins or so.
If that will help you, great. |

Some routers react poorly when Telus gives you short lease times. You could try a different router or newer firmware. |

Well, I tried changing the ClientID portion of the DHCPrequest to just the MAC address. Will see if that helps. |

I noticed this same problem when I was using the Telus Siemens SE567. Because it requested a DHCP renewal every hour, it changed IP address almost every day. And when there was a hiccup in the DHCP response, it would just hang without an IP until it was reset. Since you have your own router, set it to infinite and it will keep the same IP. I have had the same one for over 45 days now using a Zyxel router and the Speedtouch modem. I also recommend using alternate DNS servers to the ones Telus DHCP dishes out. |

A small update. It seems to only have problems with the 99.199... IP block. The 75.153.... block is fine for me. |
