Re: BMW's New Superbike

I know just about nothing about bikes, but I thought all BMW bikes used drive shafts?

Is there something wrong with a bike with that much power running a shaft?

My V45 Magna (750cc) has a driveshaft as does the big brother the V65 Magna (1100cc). They drive a little different than a chain or a belt, but nothing that you can't adapt to and get used to.

The swingarm/chain combination on this bike is going to be more rigid than a shaft drive, and likely lighter.
Shaft drive can also exaggerate lift or squat at the back of the bike as a result of throttle inputs.

For a flat-out balls to the wall sportbike, I believe they made the right decision.

The number one reason all super bikes (and most all sport bikes in general) run a chain drive is efficiency. A chain drive transfers power with the least amount of parasitic loss. Shaft drive, while very reliable and smooth, consumes the most power of all motorcycle final drive systems. In the super bike world, every fractional horsepower counts.

So what does that mean to Joe Biker? That they'll splatter themselves against a semi at 175mph instead of 145?

Yeah probably. I'm not saying one thing or the other, just that this is why they are chain drive. These bikes are basically the team race bikes with mirrors and lights.
