| reply to LJGoose Re: [OOL] Optimum Ultra Reviews! Post em here!
See the question right now is how much is this Hurting their business, as oppose to a no install fee and signup...
1. The $300 is causing bad public relations (aka these posts in the forums bashing it)
2. They are losing the potential thousands who want to take the dive, and effectivly losing out on as much as $99 per household that wants it (more like $40+ since most who want it already have boost)...
So if thats the case, wouldnt it mean the $300 is actually covering about 7 Households tht would have signed up for the increase... So for every 1 person that buys it, to them its 7 People buying it. |

| reply to baldassano said by baldassano :I wish i could justify it, but a little birdie told me that the install cost is to them justified to keep the monthly cost down.. which i can understand from their end, but also its not like they are manufacturing something.. There just spittin bandwidth.. They may not manufacture anything, but you make it sound like it didn't cost them anything to roll this out, which is hard to believe.
Didn't they say they spent some 200-300 MILLION dollars on network upgrades to roll out DOCSIS3 and Wifi? I am sure they spent that money WELL BEFORE you ever got to throw your $300 into the proverbial fountain to recoup part of that investment - and I've figured out that it really isn't that much:
Lets say they sign up a stunning 100,000 customers for the service in the first 2 years : That's $30M in upfront fees. Only. If the customer growth was linear (and it certainly isn't): 100,000 customers paying $99 month for an average of 12 months over those 2 years = $119M . That gets us to about $150M taken in BEFORE deducting the REGULAR cost of providing OOL service (customer service, repairs, maintenance, backend systems, infrastructure), which I am sure is costing them more than 1/3 of the monthly $99 fee.
I do recall paying Verizon a grand or two for the install of a T1 line not too long ago...so even for a mid-sized business, $300 in upfront is nothing.
I'd rather worry about what router/NAT box has the horse-power to deliver 101Mbps - there might be an unexpected additional $300 in "up front" fees in there . I've done LAN2LAN test trials with a few consumer-level routers some time ago, and frankly, I am a tad worried... |

1 edit | Since you brought up Verizon...
They can install FiOS to my house for free. Doesn't each install cost something around 1000 bucks for them between the ONT and pulling new fiber from the pole? Plus the millions to run the fiber in the first place.
I think it's fair to say CV wants to recoup their investment, but a giant activation fee isn't the best way to do that.
Edit: As for routers, there are a couple Sub-$100 routers that get excellent speeds (100Mbps+ WAN-to-LAN) |

| reply to jimboe said by jimboe :said by Jeffrey :Thanks, I'll pass until that comes down to $0 activation fee, .. ..me suspects you may be waiting a long time for this to happen.. That's OK. These days, I'm about price. I expect Verizon to come out with some package to compete with the 101/15 marketing, although highlighting CV's $300 activation fee shouldn't be too hard. That said, next year when Fios gets to my block, I'll evaluate the packages, speeds, and plans, and go from there.
When I was a CV subscriber in 1999, I had a Sharkfin modem that I had to buy for $100 @ The Wiz, and then locked into a two year contract at $29.99. I thought that was a fair deal back then, but as time went on, things changed. Modems were handed out, and contracts eliminated. Its nothing more than a normal DSL or any POTS line installation. ALL T1s are SDSL/HDSL/SHDSL lines, sometimes bonded for distance reasons. |

| reply to LJGoose Dont be surprised if the speed reviews are mixed.. Remember, Your download speed is only as good as someone's upload speed... and at 100 meg your only gonna benefit from sites that are hosted on OC lines +... (which yes most sites are, but still, add in congestion, latency etc...)..
Im more curious the latency times to say Texas and such.. I imagine they should be the same 40's-50's, which is real sweet. |

This is supposed to be a review of the service not bashing the price. Yes it's steep but for power users it's nothing. I saw that this required a business static IP so this is more of business line right? All I'm seeing is four pages of of controversy rather than what the title says. I hope the OP deletes all the prior comments including mine and start with the actual reviews. |
