Not too terribly bad

It's a pretty good deal should you want a cheap cell phone to throw in the car in case of emergencies. No need to worry about minutes expiring or whatnot.

Now if only they did something similar with data usage, I'd be all over that.

way too expensive for that - I have a prepaid plan from ATT that is $100, minutes last a year and they give you the phone. That's $8/month, less than 1/10 the cost of this plan. For 1/10 the cost, I'll deal with having to add minutes every year.

It's actually not that great of a deal if you consider that the minutes expire after 30 days. If you want them to last for a year, then you have to buy $100 worth of time. Someone else already pointed out that it's not as cost-effective if you buy that much.

And I wholeheartedly agree with you about the data plan! If I could get say, 10 days of unlimited access for $x per day (for trips) I'd be down with that.

Actually, buy a $100 card and your service lasts a year ($8.33 per month) or a $25 card for 90 days ($8.33 per month). Until you take the phone out of the glove compartment and make a call, you aren't charged out of that $100 for usage. So out of the year you could have 33 days during which you talk as much as you want. Nice for emergencies since you're not constantly in fear of draining your minute account in one day.

Though honestly I'd go with a Verizon-based prepaid (Page Plus Cellular for example) at this point; Verizon + Alltel = MASSIVE COVERAGE.
