"they are late adding HD channels"

That's why I left DISH for Direct. Direct had far more of the channels I watch in HD that DISH did at the time.

They may be late, but last month they surpassed DirecTV in national HD count. They now sit at 140 national HD channels to Direct's 130. Not only that, but they still have capacity to turn up more, while DirecTV is stuck until they get another bird launched late this year.

DirecTV's success is largely due to successful advertising campaigns coupled with locking up NFL Sunday Ticket and paying the premium to carry MLB Extra Innings. The subscriber gains come at a cost though. Direct made $201 million on $4.90 billion in revenue, while Dish made $313 million on $2.91 billion in revenue. That's impressive considering most (not all) Dish subscribers end up paying less than they would for the same channels with DirecTV.

Re: hey charlie

The only reason I am going to Dish over Direct when my Cable contract expires is because Dish currently offers more in HD for a lower price than Direct. I just hope they don't have any more fiasco's by dropping channels.

September: DirecTV 12

mission: commercial communications satellite

Sept launch it would put into next year before the bird is ready to handle the load all the testing that has to be done.

Assuming it doesn't blow up or fail to make orbit--- one of the things that got Dish behind in the HD race was that bird that failed to orbit properly last year (or before?). They've caught up now, however.

What do you mean "cheaping out" He stands up to the content suppliers which are mostly owned by his cable, and over the air competition. He refused to pay the price increases and called their bluff, Mostly these content suppliers wanted Dish to bundle channels, Dish was expected to fork over the increase cost for one good channel and a couple that nobody would watch. Charlie did not think this was fair and told them to go packing, and he got his way. Does this sound like a loyal customer, damn straight. If he caved in too the demands of these production studio's you wazoo's would be the first one to bitch and moan about price increases and why I am paying for channels I don't even watch. The detractors of "Charlie" don't appear to be subscribers so they are bitching and pointing fingers from the outside.

I have been a loyal customer for ever well over 15 years. I had to get a new DVR as mine finally crapped out after years of being on 24/7. They wanted me to sign up for a 24 month contract so I could get an upgraded DVR, I told the operator, who spoke very good english, that was fine with me because they will have to pry my Dish Network system out of my cold dead hands.

Ask Native Americans in Alaska about dish Network. Dish is the only media provider that uplinks and beams Native American Channels into Alaska. These are channels run by the Tribes in Alaska who provide programing in their native languages. I remember a hearing before a Senate commitee and "Charlie" was asked by an Alaskan Senator if he could provide some kind of televison service for Alaska Citizens, and Native Americans, Charlie met with the Alaskan Delagation and with their help setup such programing.

Re: hey charlie

It's not just his negotiation tactics that have earned him that repuation. They ask you to go climb up on your roof and mail the LNB back when you cancel. They also have an extremely rude audit team that harasses people who don't have landlines to read numbers off receivers to make sure they're not sharing accounts.

There's nothing UNREASONABLE about that, but little things like that are enough to turn people off and lose customers forever.

Huh?? They installed the LNB for me... I've had DTV from '97 until '04 and Dish ever since. I hardly noticed a difference. I missed the TIvo unit from DTV, but when I used thier replacement - I was glad I went to Dish.

How do you like you out of sync audio on your Uverse?

I've never experienced out of sync audio on my U-Verse, but I hate the U-verse pause and stutter that only happens on programs we want to watch...

You must be talking about the lifetime ordeal. Yes I remember that. Disney owns many channels like ESPN and Lifetime and they like to bundle channels to extort more carriage for lesser viewed channels. But from what I understood, charlie paid Disney ahead of time for the privilege to negotiate for Lifetime on its own. For that reason, Disney caved. But they still let Dish shut those channels down for a few months. After that, Disney finally figured out they were loosing more money in being stubborn. Personally, I feel that channel bundling and carriage extortion should be illegal. And if there is one company more responsible for high increases in content it would be Disney.. Channels like ESPN command some of the highest carriages and are viewed by a minority. Its impossible to unbundle these sports tiers unless you sign up for the most limited tiers which provide very few channels.

To all you people who say that Dish should just rollover and give the Content providers every fee and price hike they ask for, well, welcome to Cable.

There's a reason Dish fights to keep prices down. It benefits them and it benefits their subscribers, and ironically it helps Cable and DirecTV too.

Should Dish just fold up their tent and start raising rates continuously then they are truly screwed---- as you will be too.

I've had dishnetwork for some time now and have compared my package vs. directv. By going to dish network I'm saving $10 /month, so I'm not sure how it's cheaper?

Plus the HD content has increased drastically.

More expensive?? I pay $42 a month for dual tuner DVR that feeds 2 TVs different programming at the same time. I get OTA HD locals, satellite HD locals, and a TON of HD channels. No one can touch that deal. Heck I even got free installation, and two nice rebates.

That is a good deal.. How many channels are you getting not including the OTA? And is that their regular price or a promo? Because as far as I know, DTV is more based on regular pricing. Everyone offers great promos.. even comcrap. But if your on a promo then its not fair to compare price points.

I signed up for absolute HD package last year. The package is no longer available to new subs as it's been replaced with a few others, but it isn't a promo price plan.

I don't know the count exactly as I've never bothered to count them. But I get them all except for these:

SpeedHD
FX-HD
VH1-HD
MTV-HD
Nick-HD
FoxNews-HD
FoxBizNews-HD

And I get all the Cinemax SD's and HD's for 1 penny a year. Not letting this plan go if I can help it.

But I do admit they have me locked with their equipment since no one else can supply with a DVR that has features like the 722... USB Hard Drive storage, TV1 and TV2 outputs on any TV's in my house, 3 recordings and 2 separate viewings at the same time.

Re: hey charlie

I think your original post on what you have for $42 is very vague. Nobody can really tell which provider or package you have. I'm guessing Dish's TurboHD Bronze, which would probably come to about $42/month after taxes as the base price. No promotions or anything.
The base rate for that is probably $29.99 for TurboHD Bronze, $5.00 for locals, $5.98 for DVR, plus tax on $7.00 of the $29.99 (HD receiver) is $0.42 for me (6%). Total $41.39 for 2 TVs, HD, DVR. Maybe even less if the DishDVR Advantage gives you locals+DVR for $10 combined. Would only be $40.41 after taxes then.

Nope. Read my post up above. HD Absolute.

HD Absolute with locals - $34.99
DVR fee - $6.00

$40.99 a month plus taxes. Think it comes out to just under $43 or so.

Re: hey charlie

I don't know what HD Absolute is, so once again, the information is vague. Is that a different provider somewhere, or a package that isn't available anymore from somebody?

If it's a grandfathered-in package from DirecTV, than for most other people, which is my best guess right now then, it is a useless comparison, since nobody else can get it anymore. DirecTV's regular and current prices are around TWICE as expensive as Dish for most people's basic 2 TV HD setups.

Even then, assuming HD Absolute is a similar package to Dish's TurboHD Bronze, you could save a whole $2 by going with Dish right now. Unless HD Absolute is like a "Family" plan with limited access to channels where you don't even get Cartoon Network or Comedy Central, in which case you'd save $2 and gain channels.

But for anybody switching providers from anything to Dish or DirecTV, the comparison I see is usually:
DirecTV's "Choice" package - $55.99 + $10.00 for HD access + $6.00 DVR fee + $5.00 for a second receiver for the 2nd TV = $76.99/month
Dish's TurboHD Bronze - $29.99 + DishDVR Advantage - $10.00 which adds DVR + Locals. Total is $39.99/month and the 1 tuner covers 2 TVs.

I guess I wasn't totally clear on the provider, but I was agreeing with a previous poster about DirecTV being too high. If anyone knows Dish or DirecTV, you would have known who I had when I said a I had a DVR that feeds 2 TV's different programming.

HD Absolute was available from DishNetwork for quite a while. The TurboHD packages replaced it.

HD Absolute is basically the all the channels TurboHD Gold gets plus the Platinum add on. Steal of a deal...

Re: hey charlie

That is quite a good deal. That is $29 less than TurboHD Gold+Platinum+DishDVR Advantage to get the same channels, locals, and DVR service. I've had Dish with HD+DVR for quite a few years, and I never saw that deal. The old package I was on was just changed automatically from America's Top 100 + HD Access to Bronze+BronzeHD+PlatinumHD when they removed the Voom channels. I was angry and cancelled the PlatinumHD then.

I love how people start a message with the word "WRONG!" ... this implies you're correct and need to gloat about it... but anyway..

The bottom line, you have NO idea what others pay. If you want to base your argument on today's published rates, please go ahead, but you'll look silly. There are customers that are grandfathered into plans.. MANY of them.. so to sit there and say "WRONG!" ... only makes you look silly.

Re: hey charlie

Grandfathered in pretty much doesn't count, because if I want to switch from one provider to another, I can only get the current published rate. It doesn't really matter to me if YOU are getting a cheaper rate, if *I* can't get that rate.
