Dual tuner recivers.

I switched from DirecTV to DISH because of the dual tuner receivers they have. You save $5 per additional TV. I have 4 TV's hooked up and only pay an extra $5. I don't know why DirecTV doesn't have them?

Plus the 30-second skip. I know Comcast DVRs don't have that, and I don't think DirecTV's do either. I'd hate to have to use a "fast forward" button instead of an instant time-skip button. Completely negates the point of a digital recording.

ALL DirecTV DVR's have always had this feature...

Is this picture correct?
Is that "Advance" button really 30 seconds?
Or do you have to hack the remote/receiver to do it, like I hear you have to with Tivo. If so, that doesn't count, because most users won't do that.

Yes, it is REALLY 30 sec
No, you DON'T have to hack it - comes that way out of the box
You CAN, however, choose either SKIP (instant skip) or SLIP (scan 30 sec of prog in about 3 sec)

Re: Dual tuner recivers.

Well that's cool. They still need to put a 2nd tuner and output on their receivers, or stop charging $5 per TV though.
And everybody else needs to start having 30-second skip buttons. I was afraid Dish was the only one and they might be pressured to remove it eventually.

Well first of all, ALL DirecTV DVR's have dual tuners & ALWAYS have...

But to answer you point about the "2nd output/$5 charge" - maybe DISH's non-DVR dual tuners (aka 322's) have a useful purpose, but the dual-output DVR's obviously have the limitation where each room ONLY gets a single tuner to work with. Also, you DO realize that DISH ONLY gives you the discount on the 2nd room on the 322's IF they have a landline connected to them. Since more & more people are giving up their landlines, this makes this feature useless for cell-only customers.

On the DVR's, if BOTH rooms want to record 1 thing & watch another live show, you're SOL with this setup. Most people have an expectation that BOTH rooms can do 2 live shows at once, & obviously they can't with this setup. Once I explain this "limitation" (farce is better word, IMHO) to clients, most agree that spending a measly $5/month for 2 receivers with FULL HD record/watch capabilities for BOTH rooms is worth the extra $$$. (you DO realize the 2nd room output on DISH HD receivers is NOT HD, either )
And DirecTV, at least for the last several clients of mine that have upgraded, has been pretty generous at giving them 2 DVR's at either no extra upfront charge, or at worst case a $50 one-time upgrade charge for 2. Maybe that's why DirecTV is GAINING customers & DISH is LOOSING them...

Re: Dual tuner recivers.

I am well aware of the fact that the Dish boxes only have 2 tuners to share for 2 rooms, and that really isn't a limitation at all. It has never caused a problem, as I only record things I want to watch, and will either be watching them live, or not be home when they are recording anyway. Most people only have 1 big HD TV anyway, if they have any HD TV at all, so it really isn't any downside again that the 2nd output is not HD. If you have 2 HD TVs, then get 2 722's and have them sitting at each HD TV. You can still run 4 TVs from 2 receivers, with the 3rd/4th being SD.

For most people, the issue is simply price though, and as I explained in another post here, for the SAME packages, DirecTV costs $26 more than the $60 I pay for Dish. Mostly because of the 2 extra $5/tuner charges, but the base price for the channels is just $16 higher (55.99 vs 39.99). I guess this is the main reason why I don't know a single friend or family member who has DirecTV, and didn't know their remotes even had 30-second skip.

I agree. The reason why I switched from DirecTV to DISH was it is cheaper for the same channels I want. And yes I have 4 TV's hooked up and save another $10.

Oh and I got Cinemax for a penny a year for going to paperless / online billing.

Just my opinion. If DirecTV had somne thing I needed that DISH did not I would switch back.

I believe you can hook up your receiver to a broadband connection either DSL or Cable. I have DSL so it's a non issue.

Is that really an expectation? Why would I want to watch two live shows in both rooms simultaneously? I can watch either anything I have recorded or watch two live shows in either room depending on where I am.
Yes, that sucks. Of course I can get HD in the 2nd room with a separate DVR, but the problem is that we would have to setup separate recording schedules on each DVR to get the HD on the 2nd TV. Ideally I'd like to get HD on both TVs but just use one DVR. I hope that becomes available eventually. Does DirectTV offer such units?

FWIW I just lowered my Dish bill substantially by dumping the SD programming package and just going with their new Turbo HD bronze package. I also got HBO free for three months and am considering dropping it after the promotion.
