Re: BMW's New Superbike

I know just about nothing about bikes, but I thought all BMW bikes used drive shafts?

Is there something wrong with a bike with that much power running a shaft?
The number one reason all super bikes (and most all sport bikes in general) run a chain drive is efficiency. A chain drive transfers power with the least amount of parasitic loss. Shaft drive, while very reliable and smooth, consumes the most power of all motorcycle final drive systems. In the super bike world, every fractional horsepower counts.

So what does that mean to Joe Biker? That they'll splatter themselves against a semi at 175mph instead of 145?

Yeah probably. I'm not saying one thing or the other, just that this is why they are chain drive. These bikes are basically the team race bikes with mirrors and lights.
