| Sometimes gradual speed loss ~ hav to resync
my question is regarding what could be causing this. i am trying to keep an eye on rather how often it happens right now i cant seem to put my finger on it. using a speedtouch 516 modem from ts along with a wrtg v6 router. setting are as following: st modem in bridge mode and router in PPPoE mode with option (keep connection alive) - (redial period 30 sec) and MTU of AUTO (1492)
connection and ping times seem great. downloading files and browsing is fast. what i come to notice is at times the speed will drop from full profile connection of 4300~4200kbps / 640~kbps to sometimes 2000~kbps or less 1800~kbps / 640~kbps. there is no interruption in service or disconnections when this happens. sometimes its like full speed i go on with my day go to sleep come back 10-12 hr later turn on PC and speed is now at 1800~kbps. checked both computers same thing. so not a computer/network card issue.
the modem is at closest at demarc point. tried different modem cable, different jacks as well. internal wiring seems to be OK. filters are new and check out. teksavvy support says line stats are great at their end as am about 1KM from C.O. so they say all is good there.
posting line stats to see. not sure if I should mess with Router. Should i change MTU settings? or change to connection on demand time out 5min? maybe it is possible have a bad modem?? what causes this speed degradation. everything is fine 4300~kbps can sleep wake up next moring and boom its down. any ideas or suggestions of this what could be. i would like help and options. not sure if modem is bad or what to check. ty.
** should mention that when the speed drops i use DMT to DSL resync modem and after DSL resync it goes back to full. can do the same thing by turning it off and on. this seems odd. ** |

1 edit | When your speed drops, did you ever check modem stats? Are you still sycned at the same 5056/800 profile?
If you are then the issue is not with your line its something else.
If Not Upgrade your modem firmware. Wizard »www.speedtouchforum.de/Daten/FW/···4421.zip And Files »www.speedtouchforum.de/viewtopic.php?t=1089 (Make sure you use the V6 or V5 look under your modem to see which one you have)
It could also be your Neutered Router. |

| tilhassbb when it drops i checked and it still says sync at 5056~800 in dmt and the srms and everythign else seems to stay the same. the firmware on the modem is 6.2.29.2 is that fine?
someone made to suggestion that i change the MTU to manual of 1448 instead of 1492 for the router and instead of keep alive connection change to: (connect on demand) time out 5min. which means when the computers are off the network it will recycle the ips or reconnect to the internet>? and it might help? do i mess with these settings or no? i'm not sure myself. |

1 edit | So that means your modem and line are good. Its something from your end.
Your connecting PPPoE leave it at 1492. and it wouldnt make a difference having the router reconnect.
Can you try connecting your computer directly to the modem bypassing the router? I have a feeling its the cause. |

| reply to gradualspeedl0ss This is the exact same problem I have.. I have to resync with DMT at least three times a day. I will come back in the morning and my speed will be at 800/512...
I gave up swapping cables and moving stuff around. If you arrive at some sort of solution, please let me know. |

|

@teksavvy.com
| yep the modem is set to bridge. i called teksavvy support again just for the heck of it and one of the reps was saying it was probably something wrong with the modem because he said he noticed a drop in the upload speed from sync 800~kbps to 480~kbps during one of the resets.
he double-checked the line stats and compared notes with anoter rep and he said the line stats seemed great no problem there. he was pointing it might be something wrong with the modem.
i;ve got me trying something else at the moment. I've changed the MTU from 1492 to 1448 because after some digging on dslreports I was told that was also a good MTU # to use with teksavvy.
Also I've changed the DSL CONNECTION (KEEP ALIVE 30 sec) to (CONNECT ON DEMAND - time out 5 MIN). This way when the machines go off after 5 min the DSL connection rests and connects automatically again the next time one of the computers boots up. Crossing my fingers that this will work. So far its staying, but I mean only time will tell again. Like I said this problem is so unpredictable and all signs talks to techs and other people are pointing fingers at the MODEM!!! - even TS support says so. But I will try this.
Its a shame I don't have another modem I could just plug-in and test. I might have to invest somewhere and buy another modem. But I don't want to get another ST516, I don't feel like I like them.
Anyone have a request for a better modem to get please? ty

It seems to have everything to do with your proximity to the CO than anything else. No software settings and network configuration is going to do anything.
Can you please take a DMT snapshot when the modem sync dropped? The difference between that and what you show above can tell you a lot of things about what kind of line noise you are having (like what part of the spectrum it is in by new gaps showing up).
My first guess is that your bit allocation is over such a wide spectrum when noise shows up, the modem firmware don't know what to do except to drop sync rates. |

It seems to have everything to do with your proximity to the CO than anything else. No software settings and network configuration is going to do anything. This is correct... when your modems gets a gradual drop it means the modem is readjusting to keep alive and slowly drops your connection sync rate.
Call in to have your line looked at... It's almost for sure a distance thing in these scenarios (at least on a gradual drop).

| the upload speed drop only happened to me once, and that was with 11 days of solid technitian. when i seen it drop to 480 the first thing i did was call in and not touch anything.
i spoke to a rep and he said reset the modem, that fixed it but he double checked the lines and they said they seem to be doing just fine. distance is less then 1KM from CO said the rep.
so today .. just now as Im actually testing I checked the speed and modem is synced at 5056~800 profile but the speed I'm getting is 1700~kbps down and 640~kbps up.
I know the up is doing just fine ... when I used DMT to resync the modem it went back up to 4300~kbps and 640~kbps again.
before i resynced i checked the line stats they were at the same 5056 over 800 so it seemed OK. Errors were like the same posted above 90 and 105 this time. No other errors reported.
so does this sound like the modem could be screwed up?? |

@teksavvy.com
| reply to gradualspeedl0ss Are you sure this is the one after speed lost? (looks like ~16 hours later) This has the same sync rates as before and very little errors.
The only thing that was different was a single tone showing up around 414kHz. Hardly seems to be causing any troubles. |

| this method worked to upgrade firmware, now cant downgrade, error msgs | new firmware DMT 7.4.3.2 - WONT DISPLAY RCO ANYMORE :( :( :( |
well i just use your bicephale method of upgrade the firmware on the st516. to version 7.4.3.2 which is latest support for 'international' the other higher version seemed for german only so i didnt take those.
so firmware upgraded from 6.2.29.2 > 7.4.3.2. DMT works but does not display RCO stat anymore, i guess because it needs to use UNSUPPORTED FIRMWARE for program .. ??
anyway here is new DMT screen of new firmware stats, I think it seems the same. i am still having the same problem. upgrading to this firmware is not working. it did not help solve the problem. maybe the modem is junk.
also i cant downgrade the firmware anymore b/c the method is not working so i think i have to stay on this one now. until i figure out otherwise. so here are the screens. i don't understand such compliacted problems for DSL. |

@teksavvy.com
| so even after the firmware upgrade i had to resync modem few times to get back to speed. i will try to get another modem in this house to test, it is the only way to truly figure out what the problem could be, otherwise i dont know. i dont like the way this shittouch516 is working like crap. |

@teksavvy.com
| reply to An_Onymous i swear to god man it is ......... thats why i even asked teksavvy support about it and they are WTH ...... to them it doesn't seem that its a problem with the LINE. they keep saying that I am sitting on top of a CO because of the line stats. Less then 1KM away. 3 different reps tell me this, DOM, STEVE, 1 other guy (forgot his name)
until I get a modem to test I cant really say, i think the shittouch is not working .... why is it doing this, argh i need another modem to test the theory |
