Acquiring network address

WIN XP
2Wire 1800HG
2Wire USB Wireless adapter

This has just begun to happen. I start the computer and my wireless connection icon indicates "acquiring network connection" The connection to the Home Portal is excellent.
If I wait an hour or so, it might finally be connected to the Internet.

I have tried rebooting and removing the adapter. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

Searching here was fruitless. Same for Google.

Any ideas? Thanks for reading this.

Re: Acquiring network address

What happens when you assign a static ip address to the adapter

Re: Acquiring network address

If you have never changed the TCP/IP properties of the adapter then the software or hardware may be the problem

Well, the adapter was installed by me in 2008 and has worked fine until recently.

I just installed the driver and that was it.

Re: Acquiring network address

My best suggestion is to make sure the security settings are matching

I felt it would be helpful if I passed on this information.

Microsoft FIXIT solved my problem by resetting TCPIP. I have waited a considerable to be sure it wasn't a fluke.

I hope this helps someone else.

Re: Acquiring network address

I've had this happen a couple of times on my 2wire modem with a machine located about 6 feet from it!! Thanks for the instruction, I have used the "sledgehammer" approach of deleting the entire adapter and adding it (and the drivers) back again, but this seems a bit more elegant.

I've done the sledgehammer thing too. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.

Just a note- when I experience this problem, my adapter is always connected to the Home Portal but can't connect to the Internet. It had worked fine for years and all of a sudden I encountered this problem. Changing the adapter or going to a different make made no difference.
