Two words. "Patriot Act". We all fell for it, we all let them get away with it, and as a result ISP's are now required to log all activity, and give the NSA access whenever they want to, all in the name of "protecting freedom", while the real terrorists have been using heavy encryption for years.
Don't accuse the French of being blind, while we (both Congress and People) were as blind as a bat when the Patriot Act came to pass.
Not once, but TWICE when it needed to be renewed.
