What CellPhone Service Do You Have?

I just wanted to know what people in NYC use as their cellphone service.

I was with Nextel since 2004 till 2008. Then switched to Sprint.

Sprint Phones I've tried already (Touch, Mogul, Instinct, Diamond)

Currently with the Blackberry Curve 8330 waiting on the Palm Pre or blackberry 9630.

I pay $160 for Family Shared Plan 1500 mins Unlimited Data/Msg/Web for 3 lines after discount.

Re: What CellPhone Service Do You Have?

Stick with Sprint I just switched to them and have the same plan as you with 3 lines also. Prior to sprint I had 1 line with T-Mo, 1 with at&t and 1 with Verizon.

1 of my lines with Sprint now is a Nextel Line, all 3 have been solid. My Nextel phone did need service and Sprint replaced it (ended up being the sim card but they let me keept he new phone).

Sprint by far has the best service if not it's tied with Verizon.

at&t had a lot of dropped calls and the tmo line I had would often give "Sorry circuits Busy" and I would get no data especially during peek hours in Manhattan.

Prepaid with T-Mo since no one calls me unless they need something. I still have 800 minutes left. My cell phone is 3 years old though. I got it when I was under contract with T-Mobile, and kept the SIM and number. They just converted the account.

I second keeping sprint. Despite the fact that it's very fashionable to bash on sprint lately, I've never had a problem with them in NYC using the older blackberry 8703e and 2 samsung phones A920 I think on my account. The only thing that I find annoying is that the phones don't work in battery tunnel, but that's a small price to pay compared to call quality everywhere else.

I use Verizon and will not switch. Their coverage and network is superior to the others and I can always get a signal when friends with other services can't.

Only thing that sucks about Sprint I would say in my personal opinion is that they hardly get any new phones. If they would like AT&T they would be more popular.

Reason I'm with Sprint because their price beats every other companies when it comes to plans.

I have been using Sprint for almost a year. Their service is stellar in the New York area and even when traveling in the Southeastern part of the country. I was a four year customer of T-Mobile but switched out to Sprint because T-Mobile had poor coverage in areas where I travel to the most.
While on Sprint, I have had the Nextel ic902, Motorola V950 Renegade, and most recently, the Palm Treo Pro. All of them provide a solid signal of at least four bars at all times.

I'm old school and I don't use the phone much and I have very limited funds for a phone.
What do you people use your cell phones for that can justify the cost of a lot of these plans?
Is it to keep up with the current trends and your making enough money to afford them?Is it for business use?Entertainment?
I'm curious.I know when I was making a lot of money in construction I would throw away lots of cash on things that entertained me.
I can't do that any more. And I wish I had half the money I threw away on a lot of stuff.

EXCELLENT QUESTION.....

I will attempt to make some sense out of my response which will probably get me hired selling Pre-Paid Mobile Plans at the local Mall.....

Ever sit in a Starbucks and just people watch? As they pass by, they all have phones and are usually talking on them.
There are a lot of people who have their phone paid for by their employer which is probably a bigger percentage than we would think.

There are the families who use a family share (with free communications between them) plan to communicate with each other.

There is the growing faction of people who are ditching their $40.00 a month landline and putting that money towards whatever their monthly plan might cost, thus cost justifying it in their own minds.

So I would say we as a society have morphed to the point where we panic when we realize we have left our phone home. Granted, 15 years ago there were pay phones everywhere so if your car broke down, you could stop anywhere and make a call. Not anymore. Shopping malls used to have clusters of phones everywhere with banks of phones lined up in a row just waiting for you to make a call.

So I think in summary:
1. Business necessity
2. Safety & Security (driving in a car and you get a flat tire right in the middle of tobacco road)
3. Convenience - You are not tethered to your land line waiting for that important call - it is now in your pocket
4. Cost - This is very subjective to the individual person using the service and you could make the argument to drop your landline, get a $50.00 a month Boost Mobile plan and become one of the "Cellesian Race".....

And finally, look at it this way: in the past you had to use your land line for everything, local LD etc. Now you get free LD so if you wanted to call aunt Bessie in Ohio, a 1 hour call in 1995 would have cost you $3.00. Call her once a week and its $12.00 plus taxes added to your bill. Now it is free if you call her after 7 pm on Sprint and after 9 on some other carriers. All calls are totally free on weekends.
I know people who try to talk their friends into being on the same cell network so they can call each other for free. True.

So - cost effective? Only the Shadow Knows....

Anyone else want to add to my Harvard Business Review in-depth analysis?
Cal me, but only if you are on Verizon....

I have Sprint! Been with them for more than 9 years. I have 4 lines (SERO) pay about 113 per month for all of them.

How can you beat 500 minutes, unlimited text messages, unlimited data, free roaming for 30 bucks per line?

Also have a blackberry curve 8330, one of the best phones i have used.

Re: What CellPhone Service Do You Have?

I have 2 Sprint SERO lines ($30) and then one phone got rain damaged. Sprint doesn't want me to upgrade phones without upgrading to a more expensive plan. Now I'm switching to at&t because they are the cheapest for 2 lines. It's unbelievable that for $30/month/line (at&t) I'm getting basic service now opposed to $30/month with SERO over 2 years ago. 550mins shared, no inet/txts versus 1000mins and free inet.

I can't justify an additional $30/month for inet access on a phone. and I can't get the phones I like because I'm required to get a data plan. So I'm stuck having to ebay two Samsung Impressions (free) so I can buy a LG Arena and a cheap phone to get what I want without paying for a data plan.

My usage is borderline between prepaid and postpaid costs.

Re: What CellPhone Service Do You Have?

Well 1 of my sprint lines is acting up, but it's the nextel network, I have had sparadic service all over the country from Los Angeles to NYC from Florida to Salt Lake City.

I Still think Sprints the best network to be on provided you are on Sprint and not Nextel

Been a Sprint customer since 1999. Many moons ago their fast-busy was pissing me off during Friday nights, I'd say around 2001~2002 but I could blame that on 9/11.

The price is right, and since mom is a postal worker and we do a family share plan, all three lines get a 25% discount on the bill.

Sprint is probably the only carrier that I've been able to start a phone call from the Bronx, drive all the way into Brooklyn, and the call never drops, it never even breaks up in between cell sites.

I've been with Sprint since 2004 with various phones - currently with Sprint's Samsung Instinct.
I think I would have left Sprint already if it wasn't for my family, which we are all on a family plan (cheaper for everyone I suppose).

I looked in Verizon's Wireless plans. Based on reviews I've read, and comments from people I've came across - Verizon has superior service. But expensive. The phrase: "you get what you pay for" comes to mind.

I also have tMobile service-- customer since 2006 with their Sidekick devices - currently with the Tony Hawk Sidekick LX (data only plan). $29.99 data rate + $5.99 insurance charge / month isn't too shabby. At all.

Hey I actually got a cell phone. Its that free cell phone from SafeLink.com that they always advertise on TV.
I only get 60 mins a month but that gets rolled over if I don't use it each month.I can always buy extra time if I need it.It really for emergencies anyway.

Been with AT&T since Dec 99, before that Sprint. Service has been fine other than the rare fast busy, or all circuits are busy.

I have an unlocked SE W760I. I am on a 700 Min family plan, which is shared between me and my ex. she has a BB pearl and a SE W580
that I got her when times were good.

My work phone is from Verizon, I get 450 mins with that line

The parents have Nextel and myself at&t. Nextel service in nyc as a whole is great. During the blackout they were working. I switched to at&t because they have more choices of phones. I prefer GSM phones.
