RE

These same people complaining about the Slingbox App would be the same people complaining if everyone was using the app, and the network grinded to a halt because of it. i find it interesting that people cannot make an attempt to fix their own country and the corrupt officials in power, and the bleeding of jobs in the economy, but they are more concerned about an iPhone app. That is when you know some peoples priorities are really skewed.

Re: RE

Yes, because obviously the people on cell phone forums have legislative authority and are just shirking their responsibilities to complain about AT&T instead.

Obviously.

This canard of "the network can't handle it!!" is pretty tired. If the network can't handle it, upgrade the network. AT&T charges the most out of all of the carriers (maybe behind Verizon), they need to use that money for something.

Are you prepared to pay for the upgrades through rate hikes? Because that is just where it is heading. AT&T is not going to invest money they do not need to into a network that already works quite well. I am sorry that every tom, dick, and harry wants to be able to use Bit Torrent to download music and files from the pirate bay, and watch something on their computer while on the road, but that is not going to happen. You have movies at home you want to watch, use iTunes and transfer them onto your iPhone, or get a laptop. It's just like the argument with cable. Bandwidth hogs use more than their share of the bandwidth, thus affecting the rest of the users, and out come the assholes (the same bandwidth hogs) that want the cable companies to upgrade everything to accomodate their over use of resources.

Re: RE

Funny how natural laws work.....

If there is too much data on the network then user's get unhappy and leave thus freeing up the network for those that stay.

Company sees that their inadequate network is costing them customers so they upgrade it.

Funny how things always seem to balance out when you let it.

Re: RE

I think it's more about risk than anything. Which is shocking even for Verizon who is doing the same thing as ATT on its wireless.

They know their network won't handle what people really want to do with wireless. But, they don't want to make a large leap of faith investment like FIOS. They want to milk what they have until they can pay for upgrades with current revenues.

Thus they 'manage' the network to the most simplest of uses.

Verizon Wireless execs and Verizon Communications execs are 2 different beasts and 2 different religions. If VZW ran VZ Landline, you would have already seen caps, being unable to get DSL without a 2 year contract, and VOIP banned in the TOS of VZ DSL. FIOS Internet would have the same speed tiers as VZ DSL, if FIOS existed at all, heck it probably would have been a Uverse VDSL IPTV system anyways.

Its not really that simple. Unlike other broadband sources, they have a small slice of spectrum to operate in, and that's it. No 1GHz upgrades, no node splits, no fiber to the home.

Re: RE

Bill, they do not want to understand. They are going to find a reason to be upset with AT&T no matter what.

Re: RE

Sorry but this doesn't jive with me. I am a network administrator by trade and I have a friend who is level 3 network admin at AT&T (no I will NOT reveal his name) and he doesn't understand his own companies motivation with this Sling app denial. There just aren't enough Slingbox owners on ATT to really make a dent. Only certain cities like NY or LA would really be troublesome. But a nation wide ban is unreasonable. There is clearly another reason that AT&T is not saying.

Your friend really should not be discussing information relating to his employers network outside of the work place.

Maybe AT&T should get on the phone with Verizon, who have even less spectrum yet somehow don't have any of these fabricated "bandwidth issues."

AT&T's wireless division made over 2 *billion* dollars in *profit* last year. I think they don't need any rate hikes to improve their network, they just need to be forced into doing it instead of just cashing the checks and twirling their mustaches and laughing at the poor plebes who are stuck using their "3G" network.

Well you could say that about anything. If it wasn't for people to speak up and see the little picture from time to time, we'd all be conformists by now. "Hey, my car is leaking oil, but I shouldn't complain about that because some people can't afford cars." We should not complain about iPhone because of the economy? How absurd.
