router vs switch

can a cheap switch be used in place of your router supplied by your isp?

i don't like router because you have to set it up and open ports for most application to work properly.

while your service provide you a router mine does not.

i am able to use two computer simultaneously without needing to set ports for torrent application

all ports opened

fios service does not need a modem to work because the router they use works like a modem/router?

Re: router vs switch

1st. Yes but you need to activate the ethernet port on the ONT if you dont have tv you dont need the router they give you if you have tv you will need it still so the STB can retrieve the VOD and widgets.

And last yes its a modem/wireless router they give a westell or actiontec depending on where you live.

Re: router vs switch

How many IP addresses does your ISP provide?

If you use a Switch rather then NAT router ISP has to issue an IP for each device. Most residential accounts are limited to a single IP requiring a NAT router if you want to connect more then one device.

Re: router vs switch

1 For a regular account and up to 5 static IPs for a business account from FiOS i think.

Is your provider AT&T? If it is I can move your post over that forum for help on this.

Re: router vs switch

I have surewest fios
I was not given any router or a switch for multiple computer uses. I guess they are doing this to cut cost
I had to buy one. i got this dlink 5-port switch at 9.99 plus taxes at officedepot.

i have internet only, no tv or phone.

I see different ip on two computer thats why i am able to surf online at the same time. there is no software to route the ip. i was told by the salesman that one computer needs to be left on all the time for routing purpose but that was not the case with this isp

huh? Either you got a router, or you bought 2 different static IPs from your ISP. What model "switch" did you buy? What do your ips begin with?

You have Surewest. FIOS is a brand name for Verizon service over fiber. Surewest is a regional phone company. If they do FTTP, we have no idea how they have it set up.

This is likely a mistake on Surewest's end. If their Kansas City operation is anything is anything like the one in Sacramento, they lock you into a single MAC address for each IP you are paying for. Residential accounts include a single dynamic IP.

Eventually they will probably notice that two MAC addresses are connected and either block one or charge you for the extra IP. Surewest in Sacramento charges $3.99 for each additional dynamic IP and $5.00 for each additional static IP.

Re: router vs switch

How many Dynamic IP addresses do I get with your service?
SureWest High-speed Internet service comes with 5 dynamic IP addresses at no charge. Additional dynamic IP addresses can be purchased for a monthly fee per address.

Last time I get the bill i did not see a charge for extra IP
extra IP are not extra connection it just allow you to use more then one computer simultaneously
You are still limited by your connection speed

static ip are only offered to business user and also you get 5 ip addresses

I have since upgraded to 20mbps for 69.99 which is in par with verizon 20mbps service... recently lowered price on 20mbps.
how many of us need more then 5 ip address, that's plenty even for an entire family to use.
as for firewall protection i am using nod32 which pretty much block any intrusion or any suspicious activity like trojan virus

FIOS does not use a modem. The VZ supplied Westell or Actiontec router can connect to the ONT via cat5 or coax.

In order to user more than one computer with a switch instead of a router, you will need a business account with static IP addresses ($). You can not connect more than 1 ethernet device to a single dynamic (DHCP) IP address on a residential account. And as Agent Smith See Profile pointed out, even with a business account, you will need to use the VZ supplied router (or your own router with a MOCA bridge) for FIOS-TV.

Connecting your PCs directly to the internet using a switch does not afford any firewall protection that a router normally provides and fully exposes them to hackers.

You can get a software firewall for your PC. In the late 90's and early 2000's I used to use a PC as a DHCP server for all my devices. I had a firewall program in that PC. All data went through the PC before going through my INTERNET connection. But now it's much easier and cheaper to just use a stand alone router. And between that and the windows built in Firewall(plus virus protection) I have no problems. Plus a stand alone router uses much less power than having a dedicated PC for it running 24/7. Especially now that electricity rates are close to double what they were ten years ago.

We do have a »SureWest Internet forum but I can't move this to it because it's an A to Z forum. You could try posting in there for some help. This forum for Verizon FiOS service.

Let me move this over to our General Fiber Optics Forum. Maybe you can get some help in there.
