FIOS does not use a modem. The VZ supplied Westell or Actiontec router can connect to the ONT via cat5 or coax.
In order to user more than one computer with a switch instead of a router, you will need a business account with static IP addresses ($). You can not connect more than 1 ethernet device to a single dynamic (DHCP) IP address on a residential account. And as Agent Smith  pointed out, even with a business account, you will need to use the VZ supplied router (or your own router with a MOCA bridge) for FIOS-TV.
Connecting your PCs directly to the internet using a switch does not afford any firewall protection that a router normally provides and fully exposes them to hackers. |
