avast! 5 quick preview!

After chatting with ALWIL team i've got some info on what we can expect. I'll not be able to disclose everythng in detail since some of the info is still confidential. But i'll make few points to let avast! fans know what to expect from avast! 5. All this is still half official, so if anything will not land in the initial avast! 5 release, don't attack me or ALWIL guys. The missing features will probably follow in avast! 5.1 release.

There will be different versions, most notably antivirus and suite. First is obviously stand alone antivirus, while other one contains other features like firewall.
The first and most significant change will be GUI or graphical user interface. And the change is massive. I still don't have some details and stuff that i've seen was still heavy prototype stuff but still. It looks great and very functional. I'm sure most of you will love it. Second will be under the hood. They decreased memory footprint significantly and also lowered the system requirements, meaning avast! 5 will be much much faster and also use less resources. But they don't stop there. Under the hood improvements also include massive improvements in detection. Enhanced virus definition updates (VPS) with superior flexibility, incredibly fast VPS updating (very similar to Symantec Pulse updates, only for avast! Professional users though), enhanced proactive methods like heuristics, behavioral detection and sandboxing to combat 0-day threats and many many more exciting features.

The release is scheduled for summer 2009. Czech based ALWIL Software again shows they mean serious business with their state of the art engineered software. It will indeed be a very hot summer for any antivirus geek when avast! hits the internet. Stay tuned! This summer!

I have been using Avast now for almost 5 years now,and the one thing I really have to admire about it,is that is has been almost bullet-proof for me over this length of time.
Sometimes I wonder if it is even in operation,it seems to work almost seamlessly.,but then I will notice the little blue "A" ball spinning and realize its there doing its job.
While I have to admit that the GUI is a little hokey, the overall quality in the program is my most important criteria, and not the asthetics...It has flawless updating with never a hiccup(for me)..
Now all these NEW improvements and advanced features certainly sound good and wonderful, but I just hope that the new version 5 stand-alone AV doesn,t become a bloated monster, the way a lot of companies do with new versions of there programs.
I have a lot of faith in the Alwil creators and team and just hope that they get this right without creating any/some bad
unforseen problems.

Add me to the "wait and see / pray" list. Avast is my choice now since after AVG made their "improvements" so pardon me if I don't jump for joy at Avast "improving" itself.

Still, as long as the version I run now will continue to do so when the next version hits, I'll give it a shot.

Avast! is my favorite AV, and if there were one area where I thought there was room for improvement, it would be the UI.

Definitely looking forward to Avast! 5 with its needed UI update and its improvements to what already is excellent protection.

Thank you gate1975mlm for the Heads Up.

I am looking forward to it. I have been using avast for a very long time now, and I never had any problems. I think it is one of the best free AV out there.

I really think 5.0 will be even better.

But we will see.

Thanks again.

Avast is fine as is. Anything above or beyond will no doubt turn out to be just bloat. Case in point: AVGs "new and improved" latest version. Bloat. Bloat. And more bloat. No thx.

I will wait and see too. I am now using it having been a ZASS user until it wouldn't let me on the Net. Avast has been there, silently working away and apparently doing its job. I look forward to a better, more user friendly GUI and I will wait to see about any other new features. I will presume that it will be as good as the present one is.

As long as they keep the bloat down I'm for it. Bloat just wastes hard drive space and slows your system way down and I don't want to see that happen with avast! or Avira.

Sounds great, thanks gate! Love my Avast for four years now!

It doesn't sound like "bloat" to me, especially since there will still be the stand alone AV available. And gate specifically mentioned how they were decreasing the memory footprint, not increasing it.

I wish people would read before saying something is becoming "bloated". It appears ALWIL has no intention of doing that.

I recently started to use Avast(After being a user of AVG free, NOD32 and Avira free in that order) and I like it a lot.

These changes sound good.

My favorite auto-updating free av, mostly for the fact that it's smart enough to update on the system account, and not the user account.

And I'm sure you won't find any release from Grisoft touting that AVG 8 is a hog, and runs like crap compared to 7.5 either. Until it's out there being used by, well, USERS, you don't know how it's going to perform. All the stuff Alwil is saying now is nothing but hype until something tangible is available to use.

good point.
i just purchased a new license and love the current product. I hope they keep the current install system which allows you to choose which standalone componets you want to install and use.

Lack thereof remains to be seen.
