New Slim PS3 Redesign?

I don’t know what to make of it. See for yourself.

I just bought a PS3 80GB for ~$499 not too long ago. Dell is selling them now for ~$340 + S&H / Tax and now this,….a new design,…..

The only thing I can think of regarding a "slim" anything from Sony is what are they going to remove now to make that form work?

With the (original) PlayStation, it was well known that the venting was inadequate which led to a LOT of those systems overheating (much more than even what was blamed for the 360's RRoD's and E74 errors). So what do they do? Remove all the ventilation slots in the PSOne, allowing it to basically cook itself even faster.

Same thing with the PlayStation2. When Sony went to make the slim, they basically chopped off the PS1 chips that supported hardware BC for PS1 games, removed any ability to use a hard drive short of significant hardware modification, and overclocked the EE+GS in order to try and compensate on the difference. But, as we know, the softBC on the PS1 for the PStwo was not nearly as good, with Sony having just freshly finished suing Bleem! out of existence (even when it was later proven that Bleem! did not use any copyrighted Sony code to make their emulation work), and the PS2 SDK still supported a(n undocumented) feature that used the PS1 chips that were in original PS2's. Thus, a lot of ps1 games and many ps2 games were incompatible with the new model because the softBC was incomplete, and the ps2 games were trying to access a chip (and memory) that no longer physically existed.

Sony has already removed a ton of features from the ps3 to get them to the neutered state they are at now. Seriously, what more can be (safely) removed from the ps3 to make it a slim unit at this point anymore? The bluetooth? Wireless? What's the power brick's size going to be?

And considering that what few places around here that will locally repair consoles won't even open a ps3 because they deem it "too fragile" once they open it, I have to wonder just how much Sony is talking about changing up in there.

Which given Sony's current trends, won't happen without slimming out even more features.

Sony has to do something, and not just with the PS3. The news today says Sony lost a billion dollars last year. That is no way to run a company.

Personally I'm happy with my older PS3's. My guess is a new PS3 won't have BC. I'll probably wait for the PS4 before buying another Sony console, which I hope will have BC with all prior Playstations.

Yeah BC can be a bit of an Achilles heal. I for one have never owned a PS1 or a PS2 and as such have none of the games that would necessitate BC. I also don’t plan to buy those older games. BC isn’t that big of a deal to me at the moment to be honest.

A lower priced PS3 is a little too late for me too but it could put the PS3 in more homes if it is a significant price cut.

In the past 8 months I think 2 new PS2 only Naruto games have come out. My kids are big Naruto fans. It is amazing but new titles still come out for the PS2.

Ultimate Ninja 4: Naruto Shippuden was released as a PS2 only game (as best I can tell) on March 24, 2009.

Says you.

I don't know a person I'd met face-to-face that both had an original PlayStation that didn't overheat and gradually degrade itself to inoperability.

PS1's and PS2's were unreliable piles, and the only way to fix that involved taking it apart and replacing all the solder and flea-market caps that were in the thing.

My brother in-law still has my original PS1 and PS2 and I never had any problems with either of them. Sure we aren't meeting face to face, but meet me some where and I'll tell you the same thing with an honest face.

Yea, the same kind of honest "face" that used car salesmen give before selling you that lemon you'll be spending 4x its worth just getting it back into operating order...

or the same honest face your boss gives you before he fires you to have some outsourcer who can't even speak the native language replace your job...

Or the same honest face that led to many people getting into home loans that mortgage agents knew they couldn't afford, helping send us into this credit crunch-based financial fiasco in the first place.

Yea, I'll believe that about as soon as I'll believe someone coded an app to run on the ps3 that would find the cure for HIV. Even with the best of care, your statement just comes off as trying to say that the fact that I'd basically "been through" about eight or nine PlayStation products due to Sony's insert sarcasm here amazingly good quality control end sarcasm here that all that can be forgiven because you didn't have to pony up the cost of replacing those systems, whereas I did. yea, way to demean more than ten years of dealing with Sony hardware faults, chief.

Oh my freaking god.

I click on a thread to read about a possible PS3 redesign and find yet another Codezero Sony bashing thread. You should just copy and save your replies as you seem to reuse them at every opportunity on the forums here.

And the fact that you still bought a PS3 makes it even funnier. Talk about hypocritical.

Every statement made in this thread so far by C0deZer0 See Profile
I, for one, have never cared for any of the slim/redesigns that Sony has had to offer. I agree that it sucks that Sony's answer to their not meeting desired sales quotas is to remove valuable parts from their consoles... thereby cheapening them in a way.

That said, I have owned a PS1, PS2 (fat), and now a PS3 (MGS4 edition) and have never had a SINGLE problem with any of them.

There is no point in bashing DSLR members just for communicating their own experiences with Sony's products.

Heck, if you hate Sony so much... vote with your wallet and don't buy from them.

Now... would it be possible to get this thread back on topic?

A slimmer PS3? As long as mine is working like the champ it is, I won't be looking for anything new. But it's a cool concept.

And I gotta say, CZ has some serious issues. Why he would deliberately put himself in a stressful situation by CONTINUOUSLY buying a product he hates SO goddamned much is beyond my comprehension. What sort of tard does that to himself?

I wish they would make it the standard rack size so I can stack my other components on top. Or at least have the top of it flat to allow stacking.

It just didn’t occur to me at the time,…
