1 edit | Installing Linksys WRT54GL router with AT&T DSL Service
I wasted a couple of frustrating hours following the online instructions, the installation wizard on CD failed to connect as well, then I called Linksys Tech Support (in the Philippines), so -- for installation with AT&T/BellSouth DSL Service follow the standard online instruction, but stop at Step 6.
Linksys support web page has excellent installation instructions: "Setting-Up a Router with DSL Internet Service". BUT for AT&T/BellSouth DSL Service stop at Step 6. Do not set Connection Type to PPPoE, leave the default "Automatic Configuration - DHCP". There's no need to fill in the ISP User Name and Password fields.
To install the WRT54GL router, all that is needed is to change the default "Local IP Address" from "192.168.1.1" to 192.168.2.1.

| The service is PPPoE and there is no way you are going to get connected to it without that.
However, PPPoE must be setup on the router and the modem must be placed into bridging mode. You don't mention this, so either your instructions are incomplete or you aren't telling us all of them. |

| It's connecting just fine, Linksys tech support told me to skip steps after 6. I didn't touch the Netopia setup at all and I've no clue about "bridging mode".
Here are the instructions I'm referring to:

Here are the instructions I'm referring to: » linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/lin···qid=3687 Following those instruction will certainly work to get a connection because you are using the AT&T supplied "modem" (which is actually a combination modem/router) to do the PPPoE authentication.
The reason that many recommend following the instructions in this forum's FAQ and putting the AT&T "modem" into bridge mode (which actually makes it work as only a modem) is to avoid the problems that some application have with cascaded NAT routers.
If you have no problems then leave your settings as they are. If you start to experience problems with certain application not working, you might want to follow these instructions: »AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ » How do I properly setup a Motorola 2210 with a Linksys wireless router? -- A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. »portscan.dcs-net.net »nature-pics.com |

| Thank you, I'm just giving something back to the world, in case it saves someone the frustration I went through.
BTW, I don't have an "AT&T supplied modem", it's a Netopia 2241N-VGx that I bought from Newegg.
When the Linksys router failed to connect, I just took it out of the loop, re-connected the cable back to the Netopia modem, and I got my internet service back. If I had changed the setup on the Netopia, then I would have had to change it back to get internet access (if I could remember how). Too many boxes, each with it's own setup, more things to go wrong, so it seems for an average user like myself it's better to leave things alone if possible? |
