As it was a $400 notebook, if it is already past warranty period, although you can nab a new lcd for under $150 including s/h costs, it can get a bit dicey. This is a "do-able" repair, but there are things that can go wrong, and no guarantees that there is no ancillary damage to the machine.

Back when the average lappy was well over a grand or two, this would be a good repair to make, but on a sub-$500 unit?
Yeah, and it might not be worth it, especially not knowing if there is other internal damage. She could replace the screen, and still find there are other issues ......

thanks all

Thanks guys......Thee laptop was only a $400 one.... I'm not sure if it is worth investing a new screen for, even at $200 (and self install).

Its a tough call....I will probably send her the links and let her decide.

Again, thanks

Any suggestions of a place (Chicago) that can fix a cracked or busted laptop screen for an Acer?

This is for my cousin, so I have no idea of the model # or anything, only that it is an Acer, and a friend cracked her screen and she is having issues with it (going black a lot, only having light in one portion of the screen, etc).

Will the cost to replace the screen cost more than just getting a new laptop? New laptops can be had for $399 new...so just trying to figure this out for her.

Thank you.
Depends on the price and age of the laptop. A new 1,500 dollar laptop screen replacement will be more cost effective than for an old 300 dollar laptop by far.

Sometimes it can be cheaper to replace the laptop screen if you do it yourself.

I have done this with a dell and one the screen is off, on the back, the serial number can be googled for price comparison.
Looking for used laptop with same screen can also be an option especially if the laptop doesn't work but the screen does.

Here is a decent guide on how to do it yourself;

»computershopper.com/laptops/howt···p-screen

If you get the modle number of the screen itself I can find you a decent price for it, in the mean time a search for broken,non working acer laptop of same modle might be a start.

another link;

To get an idea of the pricing, here is acer aspire screen prices, they have travelmate screens as well;

»www.nylaptopparts.com/index.php?···1913a0af

Good luck

Myself, I'd replace the laptop for as you said a decent lower end/priced unit or a mid range on sale for same price you mentioned.
