 | comcast mail / smtp server? comcarp | | compost error | |
does anyone know the current SMTP / outbound mail server for comcast??
I have smtp.comcast.net and it died two weeks ago... just cant send mail off of it. Its still dead today.
It seems it dosent even connect to it, so I think that password / user name / other server settings are out....
I am now using a relay server from my host... but probably need to figure comcast out.
Thank-You for your help.! |

 | reply to qerfwfwsdfasdf Thank you for your replies.
I am using the 587 port, and tried authentication, but didnt work.... it says authentication required.
I even put my comcast.net stuff in there to check email first to try and eliminate a check before send rule... but no good.
Any other suggestions? |

Comcast Customer Security Assurance Notice Help prevent PC viruses with the all-new McAfee Security Suite
No additional cost!
Dear Comcast High-Speed Internet Subscriber:
Action Taken: In an effort to help prevent spam and ensure the security of our network and customers, Comcast has modified your modems settings to prevent the sending of email on port 25. That is the default port email programs such as Outlook Express use to send email. Weve taken this action because we may have detected virus-like activity from your modem or received reports from other email providers that mail from your modem generated complaints from their users. Please read this message to understand how this action may impact your ability to send email and what you should do next.
Comcast Webmail Users If you use a web browser to access your Comcast.net email, this action will not affect your ability to send or receive e-mail. This action also does not affect any non-Comcast webmail services.
Email Program Users (Outlook Express, Outlook, MacMail, etc.) If you use an email program, this action will disable your programs ability to send email until you change your email program settings to send email on port 587. Port 587 uses authentication and is an industry-recommended alternative to port 25. If you use Outlook Express and Comcast.net email, Comcast has provided a simple one click fix for you to use with Internet Explorer. If you use another email program such as MacMail, Eudora, or Thunderbird, please visit our client page for information on how to change the settings for sending email in your email program.
If you are not using Comcast.net email and use another email provider, please contact your provider for its recommended port settings. Most email providers offer an alternative to port 25 for sending email.
All Users
To help protect your security and privacy, it is important to regularly check for and remove any possible viruses from your computer. You can do this using the McAfee Antivirus and Firewall software available from Comcast to subscribers at no additional charge or by using other popular antivirus solutions that are widely available. In addition, Comcast recommends that you secure any wireless network in the home and that the operating systems on your computers be updated regularly with the latest security enhancements. Please visit the Comcast.net security channel for more information and tips on how to enjoy a safe and secure online experience.

1) Remove your account settings and re-add them entirely new. Ensure when you remove them you don't remove your mailboxes.
2) Check if your A/V software isn't stopping the connection.
587 or 465 should work if 25 is blocked. We don't block those ports but authentication is mandatory (remember just the username piece, not your whole email address).
Port 587 SSL is optional and it's mandatory on 465. |

 | reply to qerfwfwsdfasdf Thank you for your help - I used port 587. I typed my user name into the eudora account settings and then when I did the send / receive it asked for my password.
I had to update to eudora 8... I dont think eudora 7 has a function to send user name and password to the SMTP server like it wants.
Ive never had to type in a user name / password to send mail. |

Ive never had to type in a user name / password to send mail. You have to supply your password because 587 uses authentication. However you should be able to have the client remember your password so you don't have to enter it everytime. |

| reply to hjghhdghfg I am not familiar with any version of Eudora, but I do know that some older versions of some email clients only offered the user the most common methods of connection to mail servers as they existed ten years ago. Alas, the nature of "How the Internet Works" has changed in the past ten years. A lot. And what worked ten years ago, due to loose interpretation of RFCs, doesn't always work now. And older applications, which relied on things working a certain way, often can't be made to adjust to the times. Which is one of the reasons that using a current version of an application is the best way to go. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

Re: more info about comcast smtp Is this a uniform letter Comcast is sending to all of us for some reason? I got the same e-mail today as well. It just seems ironic I turned my firewall off two days ago and now I get this e-mail today. I did have a trojan virus in my old computer which I haven't used in a week which makes it seem strange that comcast would just now do this to my e-mail if it was from that but who knows. I already changed to port 587 though and everything works fine.

Nope, it's only sent on evidence of some kind of abuse. Since you had a trojan and you also recently turned your firewall off, it sounds like you might want to do some more extensive checking. |
