said by Oldgoat :Actually I'm probably going to buy an NAS box. The USB port on the router will be to slow for what I want to do. I will be storing folders full of files which I want to be able to access from either my desktop or laptop. Also I will be able to access my file folders via internet if I choose to do that. My last router was a really old D-Link. It was working but I decided to upgrade to gigabit. I originaly bought a newer D-Link gigabit router but I took it back. I did not like the problems I had to deal with. This Belkin works as smooth as silk. Do you know if there is a way to adjust the MTU setting on the router. There is nothing on the menu screen about it. Need to make sure your OS is set correctly for MTU.. I use the Sytweak tool to set the OS to MTU, there seem to be a bug in some of these free TCP Optimzers are not setting the MTU to the right setting. Once set right it kicks-in quick. Belkin N+ really open sites.. The router will do it automatically as in the case of Belkin N+. They made it simple and smart. Although I would like to control the WAN speed, but frankly again that's going to be smart option. It's set correctly and able to get very high uploads and downloads are much faster then current DIR-655. Very impressive. I wanted to get another Belkin N+ to extend the range. I don't see anyone here using two of them in the house.
Right now I got the DIR-655 to extend it the range... |

| reply to Oldgoat said by Oldgoat :Actually My FW is 1.01.19 which is what came on the router when I bought it. I am wondering if these new FW versions help speed up the data transfer through the USB port on the router to an external HD. Right now it is really slow. The original FW version I am using seems to run just fine. I can't see any reason to upgrade without some kind of major benefit. What's your opinion. USB on most routers will be slow as USB over the network is never really quick. But you would think since this has Gig ports that USB can handle data at 480mbps and the router real-time 600-699mbps even though 1000mbps.
What do you want to do though? Store data only or use like a NAS drive? Store/Read/Write on the fly.
As for firmware I do agree with you unless something major was fix and speed is the same I would continue to use the current firmware. But mine has some features that weren't available for most reviews.
I take it Belkin has two models one for on ADSL+Modem Router no Gig ports on the first models then later got added on. Then there is the one I have that works with Cable/DSL and gig ports.
I was using Dlink DIR-655 for a year now but nothing with issues with the wireless. I should have stuck it out with the firmware it came with. They have so many firmware updates a lot of which limits functions and they have a terrible problem with DNS Replay.
Right now I using it with the Belkin N+ as AP and the Belkin N+ is the main router and wireless N. |

1 edit | Regarding the F5D8235-4 (N+ Router), has anybody tried the beta FW Ver 1.01.24 dated 5/01/09. If anybody has please post what is new about it. Also does anybody know if Belkin has a site to explain what is new about a beta release.
Different question. Does anybody know how to access the MTU settings in this router. I can find nothing on the menu. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Just got my own answer from Belkin support:
Thank you for choosing Belkin Technical Support.
We understand that you are facihng a concern with firmware.
Note: The firmware 1.01.24, the router`s configuration file is no longer in plain text. As a result, it is not possible to restore a configuration file saved with an earlier version of the firmware on version 1.01.24 or later.
This is a pre-release firmware 1.01.26 update for the N+ Wireless Router F5D8235 version 1 only. It has not yet been approved by Belkin QA. However, it resolves a number of problems that have been reported with the router. The most important changes are: 1. It is now possible to use non-English characters in file names on the connected storage device 2. A number of compatibility issues where storage devices would not be recognised have been solved 3. A problem with automatic reconnection after connection problems on PPPoE connections has been fixed 4. A problem with the manual setup of a PPPoE connection using Mozilla Firefox has been corrected 5. A throughput problem on fast PPPoE connections of over 40 Mbps has been corrected
Secondly, we recommend that you update the firmware 1.01.26 on the router F5D8235 from a computer that is hardwired to it. Please download the latest firmware for the router from the link given below: Deleted
and save it to the computer and then follow the instructions given below to update the firmware on the router home page:

- Click on Dynamic and then click on Next. - Type in your Hostname if youre Internet Service Provider has provided it. Else, leave it blank. - Click on "Change WAN MAC Address". - Click on the button "Clone". - Click on Apply Changes.
If the connection type is PPPOE (DSL):
- Click on PPPOE and click on Next. - Enter the user name and password given by your Internet Service Provider. - Save the settings. - Click on the Home link at the top of the screen.
Note: Please obtain the correct values regarding the Internet connection from your Internet Service Provider.
Internet Status should show Connected on the top right hand corner of the web page
Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns. We will be glad to help you. |
