[CDV] download caps and comcast voice

I've searched different areas of the forum and haven't found a clear answer, does Comcast Voice (their VoIP service) count toward your 250gb internet cap?

Thanks so much.

No, it does not. CDV is not an internet service. Has it's own dedicated bandwidth and never hits the public internet.

Which is one reason there may be legal issues as non-Comcast VOIP services would be affected by a cap...

I don't think so, but it depends on how you look at it. CDV is not a true VoIP service, Vonage and the like are. They use Internet bandwidth to complete their offerings. Comcast, like the phone company, has their own 'independent' network to offer their service. The traditional phone company would count vonage against your cap on DSL, but doesn't have to on their POTS line. Is that unfair too. It's really the same thing when you boil it down.

CDV is 100% VOIP. It has nothing to do with whether or not it hits "the public internet" (whatever that means. The whole saying screams you don't understand what the internet is.) or not. CDV puts voice over IP therefore by definition it is voip.

It's not a traditional VoIP, so excuse me for not being more specific. Yes, I do infact know what the internet is and how it works. All I ment by that statement is our phone traffic stays on our network until it hits the public phone network, rather than being routed through other networks before it hits the public phone network.

Beyond that, I don't feel the intent of this thread was to start this discussion and I have gotten off track enough as it is. Sorry to the OP

CDV is VOIP but it is nothing like Vonage or any of the "traditional" VOIP services. If you have CDV and make a call the call is routed one of two ways. It is either to another local CDV customer in which case the call stay within the HFC Network (more like intranet than internet) or the call is routed to it's destination via the ILEC's and PSTN system. Yes I know it's actually more technical than that but I'm keeping it simple.

Not to troll, but I couldn't help but respond to Captain's post after reading it. The service is voice over ip, however the "public internet", refers to the actual internet itself. Which the comcast digital voice doesn't truly interact with. It goes over their INTRANET, or internal network and not the internet.

So the statement itself is true, CDV is not the same as standard voip.

So you are saying that CDV uses a PSTN type network instead of the IP network?

Re: [CDV] download caps and comcast voice

No, it uses a different part of their network. Or a different layer. Or different fiber. Or different special sauce. It's just not IP as in VOIP

Re: [CDV] download caps and comcast voice

Motorola, Arris, RCA (Thompson) are the ones (eMTA) I have personally setup in customer homes for CDV/Net.
