2 edits | Computer Crawls After Comcast Install
Hello I am posting this on behalf of my son. He used to have FIOS but for various reasons he switched to Comcast HSI. The installer came on Friday, and seemed a little bit confused, but finally got it hooked up. But ever since then, my son's computer is so slow as to almost be unusable. His computer has a 2.0Ghz processor, 1GB of ram and runs Windows XP Home version. What concerns us is that the "system process" is now constantly using between 20-40 percent of the CPU even at idle. My son said this never occurred before. We ran every spyware and antivirus program we could find, and the machine seems clean. We called Comcast tech support but they could not offer any help. We are wondering if maybe the installer put some files on the machine that are causing it to run so slow. Or could it possibly be something related to old FIOS files still on the computer? We have spent many hours trying to troubleshoot this problem and are at our wits end now. Any help would be appreciated. I apologize for the length of this post and if it this in the wrong forum I hope a monitor will move it to where it belongs. |

| If you have system restore disks I would run them. Just make sure you have things backup that you still want. You don't need any software from comcast to use the internet so Do Not use there disk. |

I was thinking of that to but I wouldn't think whatever is on the install disk would cause this. Unless comcast comes with Norton instead of Mcaffee now. There's no system that Norton won't choke. LOL |

| reply to chad0404 Isnt there something for windows similar to "top" for linux? That will show you what exactly is using this 20-40% of CPU?
Don't have a windows computer in front of me, and been a while since used one for more than an hour. But pretty sure that little pop up when you hit ctrl alt del will tell you what is using the CPU, but not 100% sure. If not, get a 3rd party program to tell you.
That would be the 1st step. |

| reply to chad0404 The "System Process" you're talking about is called "System Idle Process". This process showing 20-40% CPU usage indicates that 60-80% of your CPU is being used by something else.
In Windows XP, run Task Manager (or hit Control-Alt-Delete to launch it), choose the Processes tab, then left-click on the CPU column until it's sorted by highest-usage-first.
You might also have to go to the View menu and choose Update Speed -> High.

| While Koitsu may be correct regarding the System Idle process there is indeed a System process which has several sub processes that can be utilizing your CPU.
I have run into something similar a few times and used process explorer to identify the cause.

Process explorer will break out everything running under the System process so you can see exactly what it is that is running up the CPU. |

@comcast.net | reply to chad0404 More than likely its the monitoring software Comcast installs and its slowing the system down (monitoring as in help software). Try uninstalling it, its not required. |

Since the computer/modem is now registered on the network(which could have been done without software BTW), it will work fine.

| reply to tryingtohelpout Desktop doctor basically hook windows own network errors and gives what they feel is an easier to understand script/error instead of the windows one. I've never seen it take to large CPU or ram resource hogging. Mcaffee on the other hand...
That said I do feel its a useless piece of software and bypass installing it on my jobs, as well as the toolbar cus I hate using IE for provisioning and seeing like 15 different tool bars start up over a 10 minute period. :/ |
