New Service? - Rogers Online Protection

I didn't see a post already, so I apologize if this has been posted before.

I have been using Rogers Express Internet now for about 15 months with no issues, and installed the "included" Norton package that came with it. I just noticed yesterday that it asked me to upgrade to the new service as the "Norton" package was going to expire at the end of June. I installed the new services and I think it may be an improvement on the old services. For one, everything is included in one package now (instead of the Norton package and the Rogers Yahoo online package). It has only been a day, so I don't really know how great it is, but it has already updated the virus definitions each day during my online surfing, so I know it is working nicely in the background (like it should). It has the anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, privacy and parental controls all in one package.

Has anyone else used it or know what "brand" it may be (in terms of reliability)? Honestly, I have never had a virus, so I am not too worried, but it is good to know that what you have is good.

Rogers has developed their own online protection suite and have dropped their partnership with Yahoo! Online Protection suite (Norton). Subscriber's will be notified that their current YOP will expire July 2009. In keeping with the previous discussion earlier this week over downgrades to Flickr, it appears as those YOP is yet another service of the co-branded partnership between Rogers and Yahoo! to go.

And Sbrook may have a point to the comment made earlier last week, indicating that, perhaps, Mail may be next. We'll just have to wait and see. . .

Is Rogers Yahoo! Mail doomed?

Rogers "developed" nothing. They are reselling radialpoint. Same as Bell.

Look no further than Bell.ca's own forums for the problems with it and non-support. Wait till you buggy updates...

Their older forum, which they took offline, was completely full of problems. Even radialpoint deleted every post in their own forum and started over, a couple of times.

...and BTW, this isn't eset. Its a mix of different packages. Search DSLr's bell forum for what the mix is.

Though it seemed to have improved a bit over 6-months, this is the type of app I wouldn't install. But it may be lighter on resources than Norton. Not sure.

the virus scan sure seems to take a long time...i let it run for two hours and it had only completed about 44% of the scan...perhaps it is a deeper and more complete thorough scan...i don't know.

@mc.videotron.ca

Its just slow.

Authentium is the virus scanning engine, or whoever they source it from.

Don't expect the latest greatest 0-day exploit/trojan/virus updates.

Want fast? Get another security package.

Rogers and Bell like to believe their doing their subscriber's a favour by including a security suite, which they say is free-of-charge, but the price increases in internet ultimately reflects the cost of the security suite, which boils down to the fact that you pay for what you get.

... and no doubt the new suite is costing them less than Norton.

Rogers probably saves a bit of money too in not having to take as many support calls from people with malware affecting their computers.

Well dirtyjeffer, everyone else. Anyone have any more thoughts on the new protection?

i like the fact it is all integrated under one program now (it used to be Norton and Rogers Yahoo)...so far, it seems to work fine, but to be honest, i have never had any issues with virus'.

I have had Rogers Online Protection on my system for about a week and it has crashed three times since then. It has made my system unstable and sluggish. I am regretting ever installing it and am considering doing a system restore and going out and paying for Norton. Please let me know if others have had troubles. I have gotten the "blue screen of death" three times in the last week and that I didn't even know that there was a blue screen of death anymore.

that's because it's a modified version of Norton to emmm fit Rogers more than to fit you. If it's free then the price is to high.

In other words Roger may let in their own greyware scripts, phishing and scams that the real version of Norton wouldn't.

Just install AVG free edition. You don't need ISP supplied crapware.

The latest AVG has plenty of problems ... lots of people have switched from AVG because of them. I went to Avira.

Depends on usage and other factors. I only found problems with gaming but all I had to do was disable the active engine. It also gives you the option to disable services you don't need.

I've been using NIS for a number of years and have had no real issues to speak of. NIS 2009 is a superb product. It comes highly recommended.

The Norton Internet security product is the worst I've ever seen.

First of all, it's all very bloated and they're cramming in every single "security" software. It just completely slows down your system.

Second, it provides a false level of security. All it takes to disable that protection is accidentially running a bad executable and the first thing it does is disable every single norton product leaving you completely vulnerable. You may think you're safe but new viruses pop up every day and Norton's virus database is not always 100%. Also if you completely rely on the firewall, not only will it slow down the performance of your connection but it's full of vulnerabilites and security holes.

The best thing you can do is:
a) Get a hardware firewall.
b) only open ports that you absolutely need.
c) ONLY use a anti-virus product on your machine.
d) Use common sense when using the web and don't rely on Internet Explorer.

If you do all of those things you do not need a buggy and bloated software security suite to keep you "safe".
