So far, unlimited data is still unlimited

18.5g last month and not a peep from Sprint. Still crossing my fingers.

Don't keep pushing it, you might get a nice letter in the mail someday

When did you sign up? I wonder if the 5 Gig limit is only for those who have recently signed up. Is anyone getting a Sprint overage charge?

kayceespix

@spcsdns.net

Absolutely! I signed up in March, went over a tiny bit (less than 1GB) and got hit with another $13. I knew it at the outset, though, that I'd have to monitor our usage closely. So I re-upped a cheapie dialup w/accelerator account for my tweens to keep them from burning through my 5gb and everybody is happy (considering that we've been stuck on dialup forever!)

Baxter21

@sbc.com

Re: So far, unlimited data is still unlimited

Sorry to hear that as I hate having to monitor. When you look at the usage details on your mysprnt account does it show a 5 Gig limit along with your estimated usage? It seems like some are getting overage charges while others are not. If I get an overage charge I will cancel my account immediately.

Re: So far, unlimited data is still unlimited

Yeah, my account shows the 5gb cap, and I knew it going in. Tried Millenicom, no workie for me. So, sucks for the moment, but so much better than dialup that I'll survive 'til something better comes my way - if it ever does!

Sprint is enforcing the cap for anybody who signed up after they announced the cap, and if you signed up before the cap, and you go too far over 5gb, they will charge you overage charges, or cancel your account, as one guy had his account canceled for going too far over in consecutive months

Im still unlimited and have been doing +50GB a month from day 1, and my 2 year contract is about to end. My stats restart on the 9th and i've all ready done 20GB this billing cycle (installing Windows 7 plus only 2 games does eat some bandwidth).

I signed up in December, coming from prepaid Verizon. Before Verizon(about three and a half years ago) I was on Sprint with basic cellular service. My two year contract was up and wanted to try a different carrier. I had a refund due but never got it, so I'm thinking that when I signed up again with Sprint, they sort of grandfathered me? lol Or I got in under the wire.

My usage last month was mostly bittorrent, everything encrypted of course. I'll lay back for a while and try not to abuse it.

Here's what the situation looks like to me: There IS a cap, it is selectively enforced, and it looks like Sprint/Verizon are going after the major abusers first, although not all of them are getting "the warning letter."

God only knows what sort of paradigm they use to identify who get the letter and who doesn't, as is apparent from the postings of several readers here who claim to have used major amounts of overage and not received the warning letter.

It kind of reminds me of how the credit card companies work: we have a MasterCard with a big limit, it is always paid in full by autopay, and yet, from time to time, I get my card 'blocked' at a point of purchase and have to call the fraud department. Their answer is "it's random selection" which means they have a jackass system and don't give a rat's ass about customer embarrassment. Something like that may be at work here with MBB accounts, but this is just my opinion. Facts are hard to come by when dealing with these outfits.

PowerSpec: Thanks for posting your info. I notice you italicized part of my previous post, so let me say that I didn't mean to imply that you (or anyone else here) was blowing smoke about their usage. I'm just wondering what sort of method Sprint is using to identify who gets 'the letter' and it seems rather random. Any thoughts on this?

Re: So far, unlimited data is still unlimited

I would suspect that both Sprint and Verizon have methods of determining not only how much usage but exactly what type of usage and notifying Millenicom. Thus the "selective" warnings.

Those must be some very selective warnings. Again i would like to point out im not with Millenicom but with Sprint.

My 2 year contract is going to end in October so lets see if im still unlimited then. I would call my self a very heavy user on this network, but if i was on DSL/Cable my usage would be 2-3x as much. I do most of my large downloads at work or at my grandparents which have a 6/768 DSL line.

I would like to think that Sprint is glad to have me back as a good customer, and that as long as I keep a lid on things, I can do what I want within reason.

That would be a great business model.

I wish I could remember which post here at DSLR mentioned this, but one reader made the interesting suggestion that perhaps due to Sprint's financial difficulties, they are more lax than Verizon in reviewing and pursuing issues of gross overuse. This would not be unprecedented.

For you MCom customers, which of you as a group seem to be getting the warning letter? Is it the Pantech users, who are on VZ, or the CDU680 users on Sprint? Maybe we could have an informal poll here by a few lines from various MCom customers with the respective devices. For you Sprint customers, are you guys also getting or not getting this letter? I'm a little curious to see if it's the VZ customers disproportionately receiving this.

Those discussions have been going on on the Millenicom board already.

»CDU-680
»5GB "cap" now enforced (Verizon)

So far it is only the ones using the Verizon device (Pantech) that have been getting emails about usage.

Re: So far, unlimited data is still unlimited

dMarks: so from what you are saying, it would seem to lend some credibility to the theory that says the financial woes Sprint is experiencing is leading to their lax approach to usage monitoring.

Well, all I can say is thank god I didn't switch to the Pantech and VZ back several months ago when MCom was having fits with the CDU and trying to withdraw them from service. I wound up buying my own Sierra598U back in the limited time period when MCom was allowing BYOD accounts, and managed to stay on Sprint.

I've always done approx 20 gigs/month. My contract ended June 6th. Since they announced the caps last year, I have made it a point to use as much as I could as a protest. Thus far, I've averaged 150 gigs UPLOAD with MOZY Backups, and approx 50-100 gigs/month DOWNLOAD with my Slingplayer, Hulu, and other LEGAL things. I don't use Bit Torrent or usenet or any of that stuff.

Thus far, no letter. We're also pulling approx 40 gigs up and down on our other sprint data card at work, and I do around 20 gigs/month on my PDA Phone running Slingbox and ORB.

I was planning on canceling my datacard once my initial MOZY backup is complete. 3 Terabytes total to upload. I think I have one more month to go.

Unless, now that my contract is up, Sprint Cancels me.

My speeds at home are around 110k down, and 120-130k upload, so I have pretty much the whole tower T1 to myself.

Lets see what happens!

Re: So far, unlimited data is still unlimited

That'll do it. I backup important files online too, and that can really cut through a 5GB cap in no time. So I don't know what we're going to do once this cap takes affect. Probably go back to dial-up, as it's a much better deal! It'll be hard to get used to, but that's just the way things are.

The way it looks right now is I have a whole 2 T1s to myself. Although I'm too far from the tower to max them out, I can still cut through 5GB in just about a day!

When the announcement of a 5GB cap came out last yearI sent an email to Dan Hesse and the next ten people down the food chain. I got a phone call from a regional manager asking me to call him back.

I explained I have several dozen customers that use that use Sprint for their laptops out in the field and connect to a virtual desktop on their company's server. They could easily run up 1 GB in *ONE* day.

He explained it was a soft cap, compared to a rigid cap that if exceeded it you would be shut off or be charged for the overage. He said this was targeted for non-business account users and the first level of action wold be a letter to advise them of their excessive usage.

I can understand limiting home users that I suspect *IMHO* would tend to abuse the network with frivolous downloads compared to a more sensible and responsible business class user using it for essential business use.

what's frivolous, what's essential? Anyway the new cap is HARD.

As I said, in my opinion, downloading continuous Youtube or (x)Torrent movies would be frivolous compared to a mobile workforce and public safety use.

I can't comment on how hard the cap is for non-biz users, but for business account users I've been working with using 10 GB plus a month for the past year...there hasn't been any capping.

If you are making money downloading a gig a day, you should subsidize the casual home users. Otherwise you should fine tune your application to download only essential portion of the data.

Got my letter the week of my 2nd anniversary. "Excessive usage for the last 3 months" Title included a mention of "roaming charges". I was running in the teens every month. I work from home - I find that essential. Switched to Millenicom over the weekend.
