And, when you put out a full fledged browser, and with sites requiring Java for things like logging in, etc.. I'd say that it's pretty important. Flash, sure, I can do with out for the most part..
I can't say I side with you on the java based phones as being horrid. Even with all my Nextel phones, I was perfectly happy with the performance of Java on them.. of all phones.
And, you are right.. "there is an app for that".. if you want to use an app for something.. however, like I said, there are sites that do require java.. I have my iTouch for the main reason that I want to access some utility websites that I want to have the ability to access on the go... and with the lack of Java support in the browser, there is no app in the app store to help me out.

Actually, never mind the Java.. I was thinking of something else, somewhat relates.. Still, flash I could honestly care less about. |
