| Just Glad They increased speed by 50%
Well today they came and changed the cable to the road and for 1 speedtest I had an 8 meg download and then the cabletech came in from the road and it dropped right back to 600kb .
So then he plugeed in his laptop to the modem and it got 13000 but then testing the same server on mine only got 1100 . retested that over and over and his woulod get better.
I may have something using 500 kb of bandwith but not 12 meg, so his SHAW branded laptop must be logging into a different acount or tricked out in someway.
My other computer I just formatted will not get that speed either.
So he said they could not help.

| reply to haw Not to be rude or sound mean, but Shaw has very clearly done everything they can do, and even proved that its not on there side.
The tech isn't logging into anything different on his laptop, if you saw him plug it into your modem, and he got the speeds, then the modem and everything on Shaw's side is fine. There are no special accounts to log into or anything like that.
Maybe you need to look at the fact that your doing something wrong when reformatting or setting up your computers. |

@shawcable.net
| Honestly , if someone would know what that would be I would.
We did these test simultanously , pulling the network cable from his and then putting it into mine and doing speedtests.
Here the PREFERRED server for testing is chigago at speakeasy.
But i've did all port tests with shaw support and still the speedtests are bad while showing no open ports. |

@shawcable.net | 08LkL4yhL239 is the modem number and this is the extreme package 15 meg download. |

| reply to haw As others stated sounds like it is definitely going to be related to your systems.
If your sure its not software caused (virus, or software firewall) or so on. Then you could possibly look at hardware like network card and so on. (possible negotiating problem?)
Non the less there is something that both your computers have in common that's causing your issue. |

@shawcable.net | reply to AnonEDM My brand new laptop has the same problem. Maby I should check it somewhere there is wifi or another shaw account.
The upload is always fine on all three computers though. |

My neighbourhood must be getting throttled i had 4 meg with chicago earlier today and now this.
That might explain the higher upload if only the download gets capped or throttled. |

| You said he was able to get 13000, and now you're saying your neighbourhood is being throttled? I can appreciate you're frustrated, but does that really sound logical?
How did he connect to the internet? I'm guessing he connected directly to the modem. How do you connect - through a router?
I'd suggest checking all of your settings, including (especially) your NICs and any other network settings, especially if you are going through a router.
So you've had this problem for a while now. Have you asked Shaw to drop you down to regular high-speed internet so you're at least not paying for speeds you're not seeing? Once you are getting the normal speeds for a regular high-speed connection you can ask them to put you back to Extreme. |

He got 13000 a few times then left for another call saying he knew very little about computers.A throttle doesnt sound logical but neither does a consistent and fast upload with a slower download. What possibly could cause that?

I had high but then got a temporary upgrade to extreme hoping it would speed things up, but only the upload speed was noticably higher.
So now I need a wifi spot in sault ste marie I can check my laptop on to see if there is some strange problem.

Seriously though, some sites are just not reliable for speed testing. How close they are doesn't necessarily mean anything. I get amazing speeds on the U.S. west coast, but not so good in central Canada which is closer.
Bottom line - are you noticing that you are having trouble downloading, or viewing sites? It doesn't matter what some speedtest tells you - it's just one site, and a snapshot in time. Download a file or two and see how that goes. |

| Here's my test for comparison. Same city as anonymous user, "haw" »www.speedtest.net/result/479988860.png I realize that Shaw's boost effect is creating the wildly unrealistic download speed. Any test site that allows a longer test shows the speed that I should get; about 7.5 Mbps. The Iron Mountain site is around 200 miles away and is the suggested site for Sault Ste. I have never seen speedboost kickin.
The east end sounds great that would be better than WARP here, 66meg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If they upgraded me to Warp I still wouldnt get that!! |

This test was done in safemode direct from pc to modem, as it was suggested to me Safemode is more accurate for testing. Though there isnt a comparable difference in speed. There is nothing wrong with my equipment and the line is new from the modem to the pole. So cable internet must be really slow on this side of this city. |
