Westell Modems - Accessing DSL Stats

If you have either a Westell 6100, (standard, wired modem) or a 327W (wireless modem/router w/4 port switch), you can access the DSL line stats by going to http://192.168.1.1/transtat.htm. These numbers are very valuable in troubleshooting many issues you may experience, including slow speeds, loss of connection, etc.

Either take a screen shot, or simply copy/past the numbers into a new topic on the board. Give a complete description of your problem and try to include as much info about the problem as you can, as well as what steps have already been taken to try to get the problem resolved.

If you have a third party router between your modem and your computer, you may have to disconnect it and hook up directly to the modem if you can't access the stats page.

What do these statistics mean?

In general, high margins, low attenuation and low transmit power are good.

With that in mind, you may want to grab two sets of transceiver stats. One with the modem hooked up directly to your phone jack (filtered, of course) and your computer and the other set with your modem hooked up directly to your NID (outside service box).

Also, be sure that ALL devices that are plugged into phone jacks are on filters. This means ALL phones, FAX machines, home security devices, EVERYTHING that has access to a phone line.

Just to bring home what seagreen said

Signal Margin

8 and under will have serious sync and speed issues
13 - 28 is good, the higher the better
over 29 is as good as you can get

Line Attenuation

50 - 60 is quite bad and will have problems with sync
50 - 30 is quite good, with this reading the lower the better
under 20 is as good as it gets

These are the main two numbers to look at, there will be two sets one for your upload and one for your download. Another item to look at is your sync rate, for example I will post a few of the speed packages and the sync rates you should be provisioned at from the top of my head

speed package ****** sync rate
256/128 ****** 320/160
512/256 ****** 620/319
1.5/256 ****** 1789/319
10/768 * ****** 12476/894 *

*on the 10 MB package anywhere from 3 - 10 is the same price so if you have problems with the full 10 speed you will be provisioned back until you have stable sync and speed. I hope this helps!

Don't forget the often overlooked satellite receiver boxes that are many times plugged into a phone jack, and are often overlooked when filters are being put on.

How do I check modem statistics/event logs? What do the numbers mean?

Although what is monitored and the exact name may be different depending on manufacturer, the overall information is pretty much the same. Below are some of the common terms and measurements used to judge line quality. Remember these are not hard numbers but simply a generalization of line statistics:

SN Margin (AKA Signal to Noise Margin or Signal to Noise Ratio)
Relative strength of the DSL signal to Noise ratio. 6dB is generally the lowest dB manufactures specify in order for the modem to be able to synch. In some instances interleaving can help raise the noise margin to an acceptable level. Generally speaking, as overall bandwidth increases, your signal to noise ratio decreases. So a customer that upgrades from 1.5 to 6.0 service will typically see a corresponding decrease in the signal to noise ratio. The higher the number the better for this measurement.
6dB or below is bad and will experience no synch or intermittent synch problems
7dB-10dB is fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions
11dB-20dB is good with no synch problems
20dB-28dB is excellent
29dB or above is outstanding

Line Attenuation
Measure of how much the signal has degraded between the DSLAM and the modem. Maximum signal loss recommendation is usually about 60dB. One of the biggest factors affecting line attenuation is distance from the DSLAM. Generally speaking, bigger distances mean higher attenuation. The lower the dB the better for this measurement.
20dB and below is outstanding
20dB-30dB is excellent
30dB-40dB is very good
40dB-50dB is good
50dB-60dB is poor and may experience connectivity issues
60dB or above is bad and will experience connectivity issues
