Thus, it was quite literally, cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.
And all this time, folks thought that was just a vulgar expression?

Hmmm, in that case, I wonder where the expression, "Colder than a witch's teat in a brass bra", came from?

Tighter than a duck's ass getting into a semi frozen pond.

Origins NE1?

The story you posted has always seemed too good to be true and it probably is just a vulgar expression.

Re: [Serious] Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey

Shame on Snopes....

I've lived decades believing that justification (if not the whole story as posted)

Which leaves open the question: What is then, a brass monkey's balls?

My earliest recolection of a brass monkey(s) was on my maternal greandmothers mantel piece with see no evil, hear no evil, say no evil gestures... Not that there were any balls involved... Then again, I ws only about 3...

I wish I knew where it came from too.

said by »www.freepatentsonline.com/4634021.html :

A release mechanism is disclosed for releasing an object such as a ball from a body under the force of gravity. A bimetallic element obstructs or opens an opening in the body for retaining or releasing the object depending upon the temperature of the bimetallic element. The release mechanism may be incorporated into a novelty "brass monkey" for "emasculating" the monkey when the temperature decreases to a predetermined temperature at which the balls in the "brass monkey" are permitted to drop to a base which is designed to produce an audible sound when struck by the balls.

[Serious] Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey!!

For the Septics... a bit of British history

It was necessary to keep a good supply of cannon balls near the cannon on old war ships. But how to prevent them from rolling about the deck was the problem. The storage method devised was to stack them as a square based pyramid, with one ball on top, resting on four, resting on nine, which rested on sixteen.

Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem -- how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding/rolling from under the others.

The solution was a metal plate with 16 round indentations, called, for reasons unknown, a Monkey. But if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make them of brass - hence, Brass Monkeys.

Few landlubbers realise that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled.

Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannon balls would come right off the monkey.

Thus, it was quite literally, cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.
And all this time, folks thought that was just a vulgar expression?
