Brake for moose; it could save your life!

Brake just enough so you don't get hurt by the impact... *moose steak*

That strategy might work for deer, but not for moose.

The average moose weighs 1,000 lbs.

Moose are hard to see at night. They are 6 feet tall at the shoulder and your headlights will often only reveal their legs, which are the same color as the pavement. Their height also means that, if you hit one, the bulk of a moose will fall on your windshield and roof.

Don't count on seeing "eye shine." Moose eyes do reflect light, but your headlights won't reach that high.

From April to November, moose are very active and the highest numbers of moose-vehicle collisions occur. In spring, yearlings have just been separated from their mothers and are apt to show up anywhere at anytime. In fall, moose are on the move because it's their mating season.

Moose are attracted to salt licks caused by winter road management, so it is not surprising to see them on or very near the road.

Let us hope the moose goes back into the woods and doesnt hurt anyone!

Thanks for reminding to update this thread. DEP caught and tranquilized the moose on the grounds of Mary Immaculate Academy in New Britain. It's been relocated to a state forest or somesuch.

A young black bear was caught and relocated from Farmington the same day.

Aside from New Britski,where I lived for a dozen years,and outside most small cities in CT,animal strikes are a real problem and not to be taken lightly,especially during this time of year when most animals normally mate. Moose,deer,raccoons....etc..etc....furry critters are on the move right now. Slow down,look out and be a prudent driver....common sense.....

A moose is basically a draft horse (in size) let loose in the wild.

There is (was?) one on display at Cabelas in E. Hartford.

The problem with deer is that they're so confused they often will ram the side of a STOPPED vehicle. It happened to a friend of mine very early one morning in Monro, CT on rt 25. It happened to me TWICE on county rt 2 in Amenia, NY, spaced about 4 years apart. First time cost me $1500 in damage to the truck. Second time, I did not slow down as much, but swerved and the one hit my rear fender molding in a glancing blow and all I had swas fur and blood on the plastic molding, but no dents or other damage. It sounded like heck though, an I was cursing all the way home from that point, but relieved when I inspected the impact area.
The only sure way to avoid these collisions is not to drive in areas where deer or moose are present, late at night, and on warm evenings when the moon is full. They seem to be all over the roads when the moon is out.

I had a deer hit me in La Honda, CA at 4:30AM on the way to work one morning. I was in a Jeep Cherokee and it took off before I could do anything about it. Scared the daylights out of me. But a Moose? Woa!

Indeed, like icky says, please drive safe. Don't speed. Wear seat belts. Don't Text or talk on your cell phones. Focus! Be safe guys.
