| V.92 is a minor tweak to V.90 specification. Download was not changed but maximum upload increased to 48 kbps (was 33.6). There are some other nice features like modem-on-hold (MoH) if your ISP supports it and you have Call Waiting.
Different modems respond to line impairments differently. Back when I had dialup ISP recommended getting a modem with chipset by same company used by ISP. Theory is under marginal line conditions the same company's devices will work better.
Something else to keep in mind is that some modems report overly optimistic connect speed. Real test is file transfer speed.
