| Has anyone got an amplifier to work with CableOne Internet?
I have 5 drops in my home. All lines are straight RG6 runs. The cable modem is on one of the ports of the first 2-way splitter. The TVs come off of the 4-way. I'm having a problem with my Internet service losing connection several times throughout the day, everyday. I've also had trouble with some channels pixelating on all of the TVs. I've had several techs come out to the home and each one tells me there isn't a problem (which is total BS, by the way). I've even had 3 techs come out in the same week along with a lead tech and they all tokld me they couldn't find anything wrong. I'm so fed up with them, but I have little choice here on the MS gulf coast.
When I check the signal strength through my modem, it flucuates between -4 dB and down to -8 dB, and the SNR is usually around 36. I was told that should be just fine. If it is, then why the hell am I losing connection? Not to mention that I have TV channels which pixelate. I thought I could use an amplifier on the system, but their techs told me I could only use one on the TVs. I tried a couple of amplifiers anyway which were bi-directional and passed 5-42 MHz on the return and 54-1000 MHz forward. Neither of them worked. When I connected them and turned them on, I lost all of my premium channels (HBO, Sho, etc) and I lost Internet connectivity completely.
So my question is does anyone who has CableOne, have an amplifier they have gotten to work with their system (including the modem)? If so, what brand and model?
Or does anyone know what my problem could be? |

| reply to Josh39525 You do not want an amp on the cable modem part of the system.
I find this site explains my modem the best.

I like this page on CM signals

| reply to Josh39525 The problem with your issue is Cable One. I had a similar problem with them and I bugged the hell out of them till it was fixed.
The problem is between your house to the pole to the central office.
When a Tech came out what did he do?
Also do you have one line coming to the house or 5 lines coming to the house from the pole?
If it is 1 line and then you split the signal as many times as I read then that is possibly your problem. My mother had the same problem and they had to run another line from the pole to her house for just the cable modem.
With my problem they finally did a test and found that there was a bad connection further down the main line. |

| There is only one line coming into the house. There wasn't just one tech who came out. We've had several over the past few months and in one week we had 3 come out along with a lead tech. Every single one of them told me nothing was wrong. They did replace the tap out on the pole though because they said the signal coming to the house was a little low and that the tap was bad. However, that did not fix the problem.
The signal strength isn't the problem if you look at my first post, the signal strength at the cable modem is within tolerances. I have since replaced the splitters that cable one installed and the system seems to be more stable now with only an occasional drop out. I'm not getting my hopes up though since I just replaced them 2 days ago.
As far as putting an amplifier in with the cable modem goes, the cable company uses amplifiers on their lines on the poles so please don't tell me that it can't or shouldn't be done. I also have some family members in another state who use comcast and they have an amplifier in their system which their cable modem goes through as well and it works just fine.
Personally, I think CableOne's system is just very poorly maintained and they don't fix anything unless it goes completely out. I know it is difficult to diagnose intermittent problems (I used to work as a tech for DirecTV), but as many calls as we have made to them on the issue, you would think someone would take the time to check the system out over here. It's most likely a combination of issues. |

| Ok here is an update for anyone interested. The new splitters we put in didn't fix the problem either. It was fine for a couple of days, but then went right back to the same intermittent problems. We had another tech come out today and he figured out that they had put the wrong tap on the line at the pole. Replacing the wrong tap with the correct one brought my signal strength up another 5 dB at the pole and lowered my upstream power to 38 which is the lowest it has ever been.
Keeping my fingers crossed here, but it looks like this may have been the problem.
Maybe, lol. Only time will tell I suppose. |
