Field Day!!

Just around the corner, folks.
I'll be running the satellite and solar-powered stations for K6AA, United Radio Amateur Club of Los Angeles Harbor.

We'll be running 6A, LAX at the Upper Reservation of Fort MacArthur in San Pedro.
Drop on by if you have time!

I won't carry on (again!) about our 2A Field day effort here in Vermont from W1NVT. Not too many changes from last year (most notably, loss of the 40M yagi on CW).

Since I'm likely not going to be employed come Field Day, I guess I'll be able to spend more time on site. But I imagine I will again be working the overnight at the phone station, between the static crashes on 75M and ghosts on 40M.

I don't know what stations we'll have this year but I plan on spending as much time at our local OEM parking lot where we set up helping setup, operate, eat and tear down. I had a blast last Field Day (my first) and though I planned to go home and shower, I ended up going home overnight and operating on my own until the morning when I went back to where the club was. We operate as our club call of K2BAR with the bigger bands being 20m, 40m & 80m SSB and CW.

Don't forget 15M! Last year, 20M was much more open than 15M. But on a typical FD, on Sunday morning you have typically "worked out" the band on 20M. That's the time to fire up the rig on 15M, and run some great rates until the end of the day.

I hear ya. Last two times I was on a FD site (15 yrs ago or so), I let myself be talked into being the overnight 75m SSB guy. I think I left with a week-long headache each time...just call me a slow learner...

Late night on SSB isn't really that bad. It is a little less chaotic than during the day (especially if you are used to contesting with people who know how to operate a radio ). The rates are a little lower, and typically the operations that are still running at night time are a bit more skilled than some of the others.

The two most essential things you need to do the overnight is a thermos of coffee, and someone to take over for you when you have drank too much of the coffee.

Problem we always had was that we'd worked everybody that we could hear and there wasn't much left out there. 75/80 in the south in the summer is a mess with all the QRN.

I came across this picture from last year's FD. As you can see, it is all about how much metal you put in the air.

In the foreground, a 4el Yagi on 20M.

In the middle, a 6el Yagi on 15M, with an 80M dipole above it.

In the back, a 2el 40M Yagi, 5el 6M Yagi and VHF/UHF collinear.

These are all 50'+ in the air.

These three towers were set up to be shared by the CW station and the GOTO station (for 15M to 80M). VHF was also housed with the GOTO station.

The Phone station (on the other end of the site) have 3el Yagis on 15M (60') and 20M (50'), and a doublet for 40M and 75M (80' up).

Another year has passed, I can't believe it's almost time for Field day again.

Another opportunity to try and separate my kids from their video games, and try to get them back to studying for their ham ticket.

At least bringing them to Field day, to work a few 3rd party contacts, helps the Local ARES/RACES group earn some extra points for the contacts that they make, and a bonus for bring younger non-hams to the site, to get them interested in the hobby.

I don't know if or how much I'll be on the air, but listen up for W3EOC, West Chester, PA, on the air on Field day.

Unless you catch me running KA3SGM /1 Delta from my home, because my wife has me grounded(pun intended), doing yard work.

Week and a Half to FD!

Gonna be working to get my laptop running SatPC32 to control the Doppler on my radio this week. The Great Antenna Experiment in the girlfriend's back yard was a bust...the controller I was using just won't keep it's settings, so I'll either have my son run the antennas, or go with my eggbeaters.
Anybody else trying their stuff out early? At least I have everything *in one place* for the first time so I won't have to run back and forth from the FD site to my place to get things I forgot!
