| reply to n_w95482 said by n_w95482 :Sweet, I worked your group on 15 meter SSB near the end (W6MMM, 3A, SF) . Thanks for the QSO.
On SSB, we usually start the weekend on 20M, then work up to 40M and 75M after 20M goes long. On Sunday, we usually have worked out 20M, having talked to everyone on the band, so we run on 15M until the end of Field Day.
You most likely talked with Mitch, W1SJ, who was the guy wearing the "Offical Contest Shirt" in the FOX44 news piece I posted above. -- New to Forum Life? Click here and learn. |

said by n1zuk :I won't carry on (again!) about our 2A Field day effort here in Vermont from W1NVT. Not too many changes from last year (most notably, loss of the 40M yagi on CW). Since I'm likely not going to be employed come Field Day, I guess I'll be able to spend more time on site. But I imagine I will again be working the overnight at the phone station, between the static crashes on 75M and ghosts on 40M. Sweet, I worked your group on 15 meter SSB near the end (W6MMM, 3A, SF) .
Once I got on site and got hooked on HF, I decided to pull an all nighter. One of the other guys pretty much cleaned out 40 during the evening (I guess I got the people he couldn't get with his NVIS setup), so I spent most of the evening on 80 with some dabbling in 40. I got on 15 for a bit around sunset and it was pretty intense. I went back on it once the sun came up and stayed there until the cutoff time.
All in all I had a blast. I had a lot of contacts with the western part of the US and Canada, as well as one each in Austria and Japan. I can't wait for next year, although I'm not sure if I'll stay up all night. Being up for 33 hours straight in 105 F heat sure kicked my butt .
We used N3FJP's networkable Field Day logging software, and it worked quite well with a few laptops wirelessly connected. I've attached the contact map (need to correct it, put LA instead of LAX on one contact) QSO average graph, and the setup I was using during the night. The trailer that I operated out of most of the time had an 40/80 dipole, and a 10/15/20 rotatable beam. -- KI6RIT |

| reply to W8ASA Re: Field Day!! W1NVT
First, congrats Burner!
As for me, I missed FD this year, as my spouse decided we should be in Florida this week. So W1NVT had to find someone else to work the overnight on SSB.
But here is this year's visit by a local news team: »www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAjxKY4cjsU&NR=1 -- New to Forum Life? Click here and learn. |

Gonna be working to get my laptop running SatPC32 to control the Doppler on my radio this week. The Great Antenna Experiment in the girlfriend's back yard was a bust...the controller I was using just won't keep it's settings, so I'll either have my son run the antennas, or go with my eggbeaters. Anybody else trying their stuff out early? At least I have everything *in one place* for the first time so I won't have to run back and forth from the FD site to my place to get things I forgot! -- One man's Magic is another man's Engineering. |

| reply to drjim Another year has passed, I can't believe it's almost time for Field day again.
Another opportunity to try and separate my kids from their video games, and try to get them back to studying for their ham ticket.
At least bringing them to Field day, to work a few 3rd party contacts, helps the Local ARES/RACES group earn some extra points for the contacts that they make, and a bonus for bring younger non-hams to the site, to get them interested in the hobby.
I don't know if or how much I'll be on the air, but listen up for W3EOC, West Chester, PA, on the air on Field day.
Unless you catch me running KA3SGM /1 Delta from my home, because my wife has me grounded(pun intended), doing yard work.

| reply to tigers I came across this picture from last year's FD. As you can see, it is all about how much metal you put in the air.

In the foreground, a 4el Yagi on 20M.
In the middle, a 6el Yagi on 15M, with an 80M dipole above it.
In the back, a 2el 40M Yagi, 5el 6M Yagi and VHF/UHF collinear.
These are all 50'+ in the air.
These three towers were set up to be shared by the CW station and the GOTO station (for 15M to 80M). VHF was also housed with the GOTO station.
The Phone station (on the other end of the site) have 3el Yagis on 15M (60') and 20M (50'), and a doublet for 40M and 75M (80' up). -- New to Forum Life? Click here and learn. |

| reply to jeffhambone Late night on SSB isn't really that bad. It is a little less chaotic than during the day (especially if you are used to contesting with people who know how to operate a radio ). The rates are a little lower, and typically the operations that are still running at night time are a bit more skilled than some of the others.
The two most essential things you need to do the overnight is a thermos of coffee, and someone to take over for you when you have drank too much of the coffee. -- New to Forum Life? Click here and learn. |

Last two times I was on a FD site (15 yrs ago or so), I let myself be talked into being the overnight 75m SSB guy. | reply to GeekNJ said by GeekNJ :We operate as our club call of K2BAR with the bigger bands being 20m, 40m & 80m SSB and CW. Don't forget 15M! Last year, 20M was much more open than 15M. But on a typical FD, on Sunday morning you have typically "worked out" the band on 20M. That's the time to fire up the rig on 15M, and run some great rates until the end of the day. -- New to Forum Life? Click here and learn. |
