cypherstream : It's a fault of the Motorola platform though. Tan TV-Guide, I-Guide and Passport DCT all have the same behavior.

FCC may state that it's voluntary to comply, but local governments and townships may state that it's mandatory at each franchise renewal hearing.

What I would like to see in the future is a triggered EBIF application that displays the EAS alert in an overlay (like a widget or dialog box). This way it would be generated by the software, so the tuners can remain where they are. The EBIF could be triggered by the same OOB EAS Clamping signal that currently does the force tune today. Just some programming changes in the firmware and client os. Thing is that it has to be guaranteed to work 100% and certified by the FCC and local agencies.

EBIF application may be able to run on Tru2Way for support for Tru2Way TV's and DVR's. This could be a convincing factor as Government could "reach out" to more than just cable issued set top boxes. Again developers are going to prefer the simpler method for that 100% success rate, vs. an application that could potentially fail. We'll have to wait and see where developers take this, if anything.

cypherstream : To confirm, down in Reading PA, we got the second notice around the 10:47 time frame with Comcast. The first notice happend AFTER the idol performance, which was adjusted to 10:07 by our guide vendor to aid in DVR users from loosing "the ending".

I would estimate the first notice came in around 10:10 or shortly thereafter.

On the I-Guide / Motorola platform, EAS is sent from a federal agency into an EAS 1U rackmount device in the headend. It generates the signal on a pilot channel (Here it's channel 18 "MIND"). It also keys up the RADD (the device that talks to the boxes via the OOB channel) to clamp the EAS tune signal to all Moto set tops in the field. The Moto set tops tune to channel 18 (ADS in our area) which about the same time you see the "Mind" channel flash into a black background with crawling text and poor audio. If your using a ClearQAM tuner, or analog tuner you would be unaffected, as they are not addressable devices on the cable plant.

In SA/Cisco environment, EAS can be configured to simply scroll across the screen, generated from the box itself. It's a much more elegant solution, as it does not force tune the box and eliminate DVR recordings. I've ALWAYS preferred SA boxes with Passport vs. Motorola set tops. But in life, you learn to live with the cards that are dealt to you.

I am also curious why as far west at Reading and north as Allentown, did the federal agencies issue EAS for something that happened in South Jersey.
