jlsoaz join:2005-06-17 Rio Rico, AZ | Service No Longer Being Provided (Lawsuit vs Sprint) According to a message I heard on a recording when I called the company today, they apologize but service has been turned off. They are apparently in a lawsuit in the State Supreme Court in Maricopa County or something, with Sprint and Sprint has decided to turn off service to Slingshot customers.
This is nasty, as it is the total stranding of a $150-$250 modem and the total loss of internet service for those who were dependent on the service. It sounds like really bad blood between slingshot and sprint. Slingshot has handled this issue badly by not communicating better with their paying customers.
I have two numbers for them. I heard the message only on the 866 number. The 480 number allowed me to leave a tech support request, which was a bit of a further waste of my time. It should be programmed in some way also to tell people what's going on but to allow calls through to certain departments I guess?
Tel: +1 480.367.9000 1.866.506.9600 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) Monday to Friday.
I wonder if in some way slingshot customers can be spoken-for/represented in this lawsuit.
I once heard a story about Sprint screwing over a nascent truck-stop wi-fi business run by the people who now run Wi-Vod. It seems like one possibility is that Sprint really doesn't like sticking to their agreements or maybe they don't like truckers or who-knows. |

 | I am so glad I found your posting. I feel really alone in this. I do rely entirely on Slingshot for my internet service, and when it quit unexpectedly a couple of weeks ago, it took days to find out what was going on. The number(s) were either busy or did not answer at all -- not even a recording. Now, it's confirmed: I'm screwed! I have been unable to find another no-contract service provider with similar services. Do you know of one?
I was pre-paid until July. Shouldn't the FCC be involved in this, or some kind of consumer protection agency? I agree with you, this is nasty. |

jlsoaz join:2005-06-17 Rio Rico, AZ 1 edit | I think it turns out we are both a bit behind on this one. If we look at the "replacement modem" thread, they get into some informative discussion there:
»Replacement modem?
also, from February 24th, wish I had seen this:
also, from recently:
from reading these threads, I guess a next question is whether the slingshot modems will work with Millenicom? Regardless of the answer, I think an answer to the question of which places also offer a form of Month-to-month is maybe Millenicom and maybe some of the big places if you "push hard", however I forget my research.
Another issue is whether you already have a cell phone account. If you do, and if your cell phone is advanced enough to be tethered to your computer, then that is a possibility. I was able to tether my Verizon cell to my laptop when I found out about this situation, and then when I was done I was able to get the data plan canceled, but that whole situation was complicated and rare. On the balance, I think you're going to end up spending money where-ever you go. As far as staying away from a contract, I already had the cell phone contract in place, but did manage to avoid the 2 year contract that many of them seem to want for this and that, even if just want to to sneeze. I'm totally not knowledgeable about some places though.
I haven't yet seen anyone file an Arizona BBB complaint. I didn't see any on file yet about them when I went to visit that site yesterday.
I forgot: you might check out cricket if it is available in your area? I think they do some non-contract cell service and maybe data service. A problem with them is always coverage. Don't buy until you verify where it works? |

 | Thanks so much for those threads... I read & wept. I lost my job at the end of March and went ahead and prepaid a few months just to make the job search a little less stressful...
Well, I am going to try to speak with my credit card company now, and also can take heart that there will be a pay as you go provider (with decent coverage) out there by the time I've got the money to go again.
I live on the west coast of Florida, and use MetroPCS for my only phone. Their coverage is not as good as Slingshot's was (i.e., my phone won't work in the country 30 mi from here.) I have an old Samsung camera phone and I pay for Internet and Email on it. Do you know what I need in order to tether?
It will be interesting to see how many people were affected by the downfall of Slingshot. That piece about Seattle really blew me away!! How come that didn't make national news?
I came across another 'Slingshot' web site when I was trying to get in touch with Slingshot. It looked older and seemed to be about dial-up. It was a much more comprehensive web site than the wireless one I recharged on last time... If I can find it again, I'll put the url here -- that must have been the place where those thousands of people got stiffed.
Thanks again -- I'll be following those threads. |

jlsoaz join:2005-06-17 Rio Rico, AZ 1 edit | Whether or not your phone can be tethered is, I think, a question for MetroPCS.
I championed getting slingshot listed on dslreports.com because I wanted to discuss them and it seemed like they offered a neat prepaid service as opposed to the places that demand we obligate ourselves to $1440 over two years' time.
I used slingshot dialup about 5 years ago a few times and it seemed ok.
Now it looks like they are periodically behaving in a non-upright non-businesslike fashion, but I don't know what I could have done to understand that well enough. I really wanted to avoid a contract. I guess I should have gone with Millenicom, but even there I don't know what will happen next with that small company. Well, so far I don't know anything as bad about them as I do about slingshot. Too late, on slingshot. |

 | reply to jlsoaz ReadyBroadband is apparently having an offer to get the former Slingshot customers: »www.thetruckersreport.com/trucki···s-7.html I'll probably go with the upcoming VirginMobile offer instead, but it's nice Pilot centers negotiated with another reseller so their customers weren't left high and dry. |

jlsoaz join:2005-06-17 Rio Rico, AZ | Thanks, this is news indeed. It is not good, in terms of the $/mb offer, but it is nonetheless to help some of us get back into service.
To distill the offer: Pilot or someone has apparently arranged for us to be able to trade in our modems with "Ready Wireless Broadband" or something like that:
The number provided to call in for those of us who have slingshot modems dead in the water is:
1-800-647-1818
I have just called this number and got someone from "TLC Group" and they are sending me out a packet with a padded envelope by which to send in my modem, and I will apparently have to send in $49.99 or something. This will get me a new modem with the new outfit, and then I guess I will get started.
Anyway, it is not a good deal in terms of $/mb, although for me it could work out "not horribly" (the once every few weeks $25 payment). It is something.
Ken mentions possibly waiting for Virgin Mobile but I'm not sure if this is for a trade-in deal for slingshot customers or just for a fresh start with a different outfit. In the end, I don't know for 100% certain that I will do this because I can tether my Verizon phone. I'll see.
