[hard drive] Laptop Sata Hard Drive Adapter

My wife's HP laptop died before we could get all her data backed up. The hard drive is a Seagate Momentus. Should this dock from Newegg work?

As long as the drive is working, and you're sure it is an SATA drive, yeah, you should be able to connect that to another computer and retrieve the data.

Whereas something like this will cover all options, and save some coin too.

Click for full size
Drive Bay in Laptop. When the drive is seated it connects straight in.

With regular connector (external ESATA/USB encloure combo connector)

Top of Drive.
It is SATA, but the connector is proprietary. At least what I'm used to with 3.5'' drives.

Take a close look at the drive's connector, and see if that's actually a removable adapter that provides the connection interface between the drive itself and the Laptop...

(Edit): The diagram shown on the drive's label indicates that it indeed uses a Standard SATA Interface...

The adapter Ken Peterson See Profile pointed out is a bit more of a universal solution, I actually have one and it comes in handy, it would be the better choice to have around.

And as Tursiops_G See Profile said, most laptops have a small 'adapter' on the drives, it should just pull out and have the standard SATA connections on the drive.

Yeah, like tursiops said - that's just an adapter on the SATA drive to make it fit the laptop. It's a standard SATA drive. Which is sweet, because you can just throw it into your desktop as a 2nd drive if it has SATA ports on it. Standard power / data connectors, unlike the IDE laptop drives.

You just need to remove the adapter by pulling evenly / gently away from the drive. Double check the edges first, sometimes HP screws them down.

BINGO! Thank you gentlemen you all were spot on! That'll at least save me some $$. Of course one of those devices would be more handy than my drive enclosure, lol.

Those adapters are awesome. Another good related tool are those ultimate bood CDs you can find on the 'net. Sometimes you can boot from a CD and not need to pull the drive, for example with an infected/corruped version of Windows where the rest of the system is OK.

In this thread there is a picture of a laptop sata drive with the connector. What kind of laptop uses that style of proprietary crap. Second does anyone want to sell me one. I need one for my box and cant find one anywhere. Can someone tell me what model laptop is in the pic?

I think I've seen them on EVERY brand, it's just how the layout of the board sets the interface for the hard drive. If they slide in, they are standard, but if the leads are below the drive, it needs this connector to make it work. They use them on the IDE drives too. It's not a Dell, HP, specific thing.

It beats trying to fiddle with a cable in a small confined space. The drive just pops in.

I wonder if the Laptop drives that can be bought @ the store(BB, Frys, Etc.,) come with this adapter or if you have to call the Laptop Manufaturer.

The adapter itself does seem like a pretty standard item that looks like it could come with the drive.
