How-To: Internet Explorer 8 Desktop Security Guide

said by Microsoft :

Overview

Internet Explorer 8 offers users more protection than previous versions of the browser through a combination of new security and privacy features, and changes for more secure default settings. In keeping with the need to balance security and usability, the default values for these new features and settings have been configured to offer the best choice for a broad range of users.

This white paper examines some of these new features and settings that you can modify to provide a more "locked down" security configuration. This paper does not provide a complete review of all settings, nor is the guidance in it specifically equivalent to the Enhanced Server Configuration for Windows Server® 2003 or Windows Server® 2008. The settings and features this paper discusses offer additional security guidance for the broadest impact on most users and administrators.

This paper discusses both the Windows Vista® and Windows® XP versions of Internet Explorer. Administrators and system owners can use the guidance in this paper to tighten security settings in the browser to meet their specific needs. The document is structured to provide a description and review of the settings and features the paper discusses. Microsoft recommendations for enhancing the default security settings in some common deployment scenarios are also provided.

Supported Operating Systems

Windows 7; Windows Server 2003; Windows Server 2008; Windows Vista; Windows XP

Instructions

Download the white paper to your computer and open it in Microsoft Word to view. Microsoft Word or Microsoft Word Viewer 2003 (available as a free download) can be used to view Word documents.

Looks like commons sense stuff. MS tries to state that they have reinvented the wheel, but anyone concerned with security, has already followed the guidelines listed in the document.

We shouldn't compare our own secure habits with the habits of the common, less knowledgable user.

I will elaborate: boards/forums like DSLR, my own board Smokey's and many other boards have a strong coaching character also: support, help and advice to the user, novices included. So a How-To about e.g. Security Features IE8 is valuable to inexperienced users, it will provide them with required knowledge to stay secure.

That won't open in Word 2002. I have the compatibility pack but it still wouldn't open.

I was curious because I just was comparing what IE privacy told me about a hidden website that Firefox 3 appeared oblivious to...although Fx 3 did report that the main site is on the SSL Blacklist. IE has no such extension so it can't be blamed for not reporting that but I wish it had a way to use the SSL blacklist as this site wanted the last 4 digits of my SSN besides other sensitive information. IE8's details on the hidden sites was very interesting. Fx doesn't ask me about the cert on one of the hidden sites unless I use page view and find the offending site and click on it and only then does it alert me. Opera does though by alerting me to a questionable cert up front. IE8 put the sites, including the hidden one, in the restricted zone based on my privacy settings so that was good. Fx evidently allowed a disabled cert and didn't alert me. It appears that all three browsers need to be used to get proper information on SSL sites.

Thanks but no thanks. I am not that interested. Word 2002 is my last Word and I will not be using a reader because Microsoft saw fit to kill Word (which was such an excellent application) when they decided to force the horrible format of Word 2007. Microsoft just lost a lot of business with that awful ribbon junk.

EDIT: I forgot I had Open Office downloaded several months ago but didn't use it. So, I opened there. It's basic information as others mentioned but useful for average users.

MS killed Word?

I am using Word 2007 with no problems at all. Works quite well actually.

What format would that be MMC?

Just lost as in just now, this year, 2007, 2008? Any links to factual data on Office 2007 sales?

I have found if you spend about 30 minutes tops to customize Word 2007 it is quite the program and the ribbon is fine you just have to LEARN HOW TO USE IT to you your advantage. YMMV

Strange Mele....on this particular computer, I'm using Word 2002/XP (along with the compatibility pack), and it opens fine.

I also have SP 2 of the compatibility pack installed.
Maybe that's the difference? (Not sure).

Anyway, thanks again "Smokey"

I've had the compatibility pack for awhile. It probably isn't the latest. But it opened fine in Open Office. Open Office has improved tremendously since I last tried it several years ago. Hopefully, I can just start using it instead. My Word 2002 is a part of Works Suite 2006 which I purchased with this computer. When I buy my next computer there is no longer a Works Suite and I cannot install Works Suite 2006 on any other computer due to the license being OEM. I don't want Word 2007 unless MS ever sees the light of day and allows folks to use the classic view. Open Office word processor has the blessed drop down menus. It looks like Word before 2007.
